Spy Numbers / Re: Interesting number station msg
« on: December 02, 2013, 1235 UTC »
Tom,

9458 is an M12 frequency.

I agree that the message is rather odd - leading me to suspect either a special encoding or, more likely, dummy practice traffic

S8 to S9 in the Mojave Desert, in California.  Very nice audio, about 4 kHz wide and good low end.

(edit)  Thanks for the shout out.  Also, making it into the Twente remote SDR in Denmark fairly well, would be maybe S4 if the s-meter was calibrated, but 100% copy.

T!

I don't think its in Denmark, Token... try Holland

Echo_One,

Just curious... Do you have an interest in the space program, and keep up with the technical side of it?

I never noticed the shuttles' outward appearance changed over the years. I guess I didn't look close enough.

Oh, very much so... I remember watching Columbia coming down, the return to flights and the final landing of the Shuttle. You can sometimes tell the shuttles apart from each other as they tweaked the design a little during builds. Endeavour, for example is the lightest and was built to replace Challenger.

Funny story - US Congress only gave NASA enough money and authorisation to fly missions up to STS 134. Nasa told Congress exactly where to stick that idea and launched Atlantis on STS 135.

EDIT:

Actually, I myself was fooled by the picture. I originally thought it was Columbia, but now believe it to be the Buran - the Russian version. Even the best get it wrong! Judging from the lack of scorching and thermal tile damage (which she took a lot of during her only orbit ops period), I am assuming that this was taken either at the factory or upon arrival at the launch site.

One of your pics from the view at this location...

That appears to be Columbia on the back there. Its not Enterprise as Enterprise never had that black trim on the forward tail area.

Hey Robert, don't get me involved with this. I never disclose how many #1 QSLs I have as I don't want to make others feel inadequate

I could make a joke there, but I'll be sensible (looks at Chris Smol) Yes, I can do that, you know

Is there any particular thing about getting the number 1 card?

You can redeem ten of them for a Radio Free Whatever t-shirt.

I guess Chris Lobdell can start cashing in his number 1 cards from me then. He always gets card number 1 as a matter of course and of respect.

General Radio Discussion / Re: We need a new KUSW or WRNO!!!!

The current situation is partially the fault of legislation.  Its not legal to broadcast on shortwave to the USA from within the USA, so says CFR 47.  Domestic stations that have coverage in the US do so more by accident than design.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't VOA broadcasting on SW to America now? I know it got the official nod recently

If memory serves, wasn't it CW McCall's birthday recently? Perhaps this is why this station is up
