Equipment / Retro Receiver Review #2 - Hitachi KH-3800W
« on: October 16, 2015, 2321 UTC »
There was a huge response to the first Retro Receiver Review published several weeks ago by Craig Seager VK2HBT.

Now he’s found something quite different - a solid state 'boat anchor' from a manufacturer who is usually only associated with mainstream consumer electronics! The Hitachi KH-3800W is a rather unusual beast.. and a rare one at that!

Read about it at the Mount Evelyn DX Report:
http://medxr.blogspot.com.au/2015/10/retro-receiver-2-hitachi-kh-3800w.html

Daniel, we are lucky to have someone like you. You are close to "the action" in Brazil and you can report to other DXers on all the radio station changes (new, closures, reactivated, etc) in your country and surrounding countries of South America. Keep up the great work! Excellent photos of Apintie, too!

Hi Daniel. Thanks for the great list you have provided. Here are my responses.

5580 - Just can't hear R. San Jose here. Hopefully one day!

4765 - Same for Integração - just can't hear it in Melbourne.

3375 - I have heard this one on a few occasions in 2013, but was always a weak signal. However, Craig Seager in New South Wales heard it several months ago on a DXpedition.

4990 - R. Apintie was a regular station for two months back in 2013. But nothing heard last year or in 2015. This is a pity because I really like this station's programming. I look for this station every year!

6000 - I haven't heard Guaiba in a long time. Difficult because of Cuba till 0700, and then we get North Korean jamming after that on 6003 kHz.

6060 - Was heard last year very well.

9530 - This is a difficult station to hear this year because of the Chinese CNR 11 in our evenings, and Cuba/CRI in our afternoons on the same frequency.

11735 - Propagation does not work for me in the times when RTM is on air.

9550 - Transmissions from Nauen on the same freq. 11895 - CRI is very strong here on this freq. :(

15190 - Inconfidência is very hard to hear because of propagation problems.

4825 - Thanks for this information on 4825 kHz. I will watch out for it.

Thanks again Daniel. I'm glad you liked the survey!

Hi Folks,

I have just finished preparing my 2015 Latin American DX Survey, of stations heard here in south east Australia over the past six months. There's also a feature article in it that I originally wrote for The August issue of The Spectrum Monitor magazine. I know most of you guys are much closer to South America that I am, but there may be something of interest or of use for your coming winter DX season. Anyway, it's a free download from my Box.Com cloud account and is 16 pages long. You can access it at:

All the best, Rob VK3BVW

Equipment / Retro Receiver Review: Dansk RX4000
« on: October 02, 2015, 0050 UTC »
Craig Seager is one of Australia's finest SWL DXers, a longtime listener with great experience on shortwave, mediumwave and other modes. His amateur radio callsign is VK2HBT. Craig also has another special interest - old radio receivers. He has personally restored many fabulous radios to full working order and has accumulated a fine collection of his own. His knowledge of communications receivers is extensive.

The Mount Evelyn DX Report blog is delighted to welcome Craig who, over the next few months, will regularly contribute a new series called Retro Receiver Reviews - a look at some common and not so common communications receivers from the past. This series will be of interest to both amateur radio operators and shortwave listeners.

Craig's first review has just been published, covering a radio not often seen these days - the Dansk RX4000 receiver. Check it out at:
