At threshold level here, fading in and out of the noise floor at tune-in 0038 with 80's tune by the Climax Blues Band, into "Man on the Silver Mountain"-Rainbow. Another Unid tune but clear "Twangy Radio" ID by man at 0050, into another Unid tune and nothing at 0055.

Fair signal here with S3 peaks. Tuned in at 0004 UTC during "Needle & the Spoon"-Lynryd Skynyrd. More Skynrd live at 0006+. Guess they're playing the whole concert! 0012 with Gimme Three Steps...nice to hear some live music!
Next after Skynyrd concert is the Beatles...Twist & Shout, then She's A Woman...maybe the Hollywood Bowl concert?
Noise level tonight is really annoying. Signal still popping up above it though. "I Feel Fine" playing now...then at 0028 "Ticket to Ride".
I located my old copy of the Hollywood Bowl album and this is not it....must be a ROIO tape of the 1965 concert! Great to hear the songs not on the Bowl album. Good audio too!
Kinks now at 0052-"You Really Got Me"

12123
Tuned in at 2357 to Joe Jackson and "Is She Really Going Out With Him". solid S6-S7.
Series of "XLR8" ID's at 0015, brief snippet of "What the World Need's Now"-Burt Bacharach, a couple of "What the Hecks" by man announcer, then gone at 0017.

MW Loggings / TIS Test broadcast on 1710 KHZ 2301 UTC Jan 14, 2014
« on: January 14, 2014, 2347 UTC »
A huge signal here on 1710 KHZ with the following message..."You're listening to a test broadcast on a Travelers Information Station. This radio station broadcasts 24 hours a day on a special AM frequency licensed by the Federal Communications Commission".
This message repeated non-stop and still going strong at 2345 UTC. I have never ever heard the Hudson TIS this strong, so must be something new and possibly local?
Still going strong with same loop at 0020 UTC. S9+10 here.
I emailed the person responsible for answering inquiries related to TIS stations that I found on the FCC website and below is the reply I received this morning 1/15/14. It would seem that Hudson County is testing with increased power of 100 watts.

Hudson County New Jersey is authorized to use 1710 KHz under call sign WQFG689 and has a pending application to increase the power to 100 watts.   Hudson County was granted a waiver of the FCC rules to use frequency 1710 KHz back in 2008.  Waiver grant language is below:

Waiver of Rule Sections 2.106, 90.242(a) and 90.103 granted 11-14-08, and special conditioned to require that operation on frequency 1710 kHz is secondary to authorized full service AM stations. The licensee must mitigate the interference by either reducing TIS transmitter power or ceasing TIS operations on frequency 1710 kHz.

I guess this will preempt any pirate activity on 1710 for a large swath of the Northeast.
