22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / Re: Some beacon on 13559.97 KHz

I did wonder about that, of course. Most RFID from phones and stuff is very short pulses. I can hear my phone emitting pips if I unlock it while sitting in the house even though my antenna is outdoors, attached to a shed. I'm in a suburban residential area in a small city so there aren't too many other things out here, and I've listened to this band before and never heard something quite like it. It's still possible, of course, that I was hearing some random thing, but it was definitely new to me, whatever it was.

There is an online stream to verify if desired, too.

I Googled their live stream and verified that I was really hearing what I thought I was hearing. Sure enough, that was it!

22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / Some beacon on 13559.97 KHz
« on: October 10, 2021, 1704 UTC »
I'm not sure what beacon I'm hearing, but I'm definitely hearing something around 13559.97. It sounds like it should be slow Morse code but I can't hear any obvious spaces between letters. There are long dashes, then a series of shorter dots and dashes. I don't have any QRSS software handy, unfortunately. I suspect it might be NHVT in Charlestown, NH based on the LWCA beacon list and my proximity to that location, but that's just a guess.

It sounds like it might have just (17:03 UTC) gone off the air, unfortunately.

It's fading in and out, but I'm definitely hearing music from WMR on 25800 KHz from my QTH in western Massachusetts! I've never heard the bands so wide open as they are today - at least not since the 90's! If WMR really is still running 100/250 watts then this might be my best DX catch ever!

Sorry for all the exclamation points, but this is exciting!

Sounds like it might be an African language. short-wave.info doesn't list anything. Anyone know what I might be hearing? Just went off the air at 5:30 UTC.

Other / UNID 4869 KHz USB - French chatter?
« on: May 25, 2021, 0502 UTC »
Hearing nearly nonstop voice comms on 4869 USB right now. Signal is somewhat weak and the band is noisy right now, so I can't be sure, but it sounds vaguely French. Have a listen to a sample here if you'd like.

I'm hearing it faintly here in western MA. I can't tell what's being sung, but I can tell it sounds like a male voice singing Irish music.

55
Excellent signal here in MA!

Strong signal with light fading here in western MA.

Thanks for the fun poke at the worst TIS station in the entire country  :)

Hahahaha... Why is that the worst TIS station? I find it rather enjoyable! I'm not far from Springfield, MA, so can often hear the other 1710 station from the old Springfield Armory as well. I assume WQFG689 is still operating at its temporary higher power level, though, since it totally swamps out the Springfield signal, despite Springfield being much closer to my QTH.

Looks like this might be back again. I'm seeing something very similar on 17450 kHz right now (18:34 UTC) in western MA. I've never seen a signal like this before.

Interesting! I thought that Canada had discontinued all WEFAX a few years back. Did something change or do they just come back occasionally if they feel the need?
