KAAY used to come in in the Omaha area nightly with almost local strength, moving to Indiana made it much harder to catch. I wondered why the change in sig strength was so drastic, then noted this;

Went from 30 to 8 and it shows.

Lots of weak/unreadable cw for a time, then settles into a 4 second dash every 25 secs till los an hour or more later, think last time this dash every 25 secs took place they were testing a missile so mebbe another test launch.

same as above ongoing @ 1729Z 10DEC21

On cw decode I find 300hz filter and set to 20wpm and it takes right off on a decent sig, does pretty well for a dsp decoder. Also for some reason decoder dislikes changing the cw sidetone from 800, I like 600 but decode was greatly hindered at that freq, wonder if the cw decoder doesn't track offset changes?

A few things would really be nice to have;
 one is decimation levels - this will increase dynamic range at the expense of displayed spectrum and 48khz on such a tinys creen is nuts

another is if they made a user sdk for the firmware where one could roll their own gui, psk and fsk modes built in, etc etc

Some notes on my experience with the 90;

Put ferrites on everything, mic, any cable that goes into the rig, and put some on the coax. The power cable is very prone to picking up rf so ferrite it and some twist the wires to reduce rfi further.

Powering the rig on with certain input cables connected such as the cat control port can cause firmware corruption.

Some find simply swapping ends of the mic cable reduces or eliminates intermittent opens at the mic cable connector in the rig, also some have replaced the mic cable with a cat cable.

Careful selection of firmware and adjustment of controls can make for a very reliable and effective rig.

I find a noise blanker setting of 5 and a width of 10 reduces most random hf pops and crashes without impacting dynamic range much if at all. Unlike stated at this review you can adjust the nb and it is effective;

Shutting off the display by quick press of the power switch reduces the ma used a bit and saves the display backlight, mine's set to a very low backlight setting and find it perfectly usable even in brightly lit indoors.

When I was first looking for something portable with low current draw, excellent rx performance, and sdr capabilities along with effective tx power, a mini Icom Pro3 is what I imagined. Well that was a tough order till the 90 came along, and as luck would have it, sherweng rates it above the Pro3;

A linear 10a psu is perfect for the 90, ample current and no rfi as in the case of a switcher psu.

I found a deal at qth for a complete kit, g90, fan/mount, and the hockey puck interface for less than a new one and it was all only a few months old.

Equipment / Re: The Beverage Antenna, 100 Years Later
« on: November 25, 2021, 2341 UTC »
Hey All

I've  read a good bit about Harold Beverage,a  fascinating man.

FWIW, Many years ago I laid 2000 ft of  single  conductor field  telephone wire from tree to tree down to the swamp where I could vary the resistance  feeding the  gnd rod.

I  fooled around by sending  audio from the receiver down the antenna via a cheap 49 Mhz transmitter loosely coupled to the antenna . It allowed me to make some seeming  "adjustments" by placing my hand held scanner near the wire and varying the resistance in the swamp.

I was pretty green re radio knowledge then .  In  retrospect not  really definitive as to what was actually going on re "adjustments " , but fun to play with . One heck of an antenna  and no problems despite being line of sight to  monster WRKO at one mile. Lots of LW b'casts and sferic fun .

Once I inadvertently got  a   good zap     by   induced lightning current from a  storm around 4 miles  ( moving away). Stupid. Dangerous. Interesting.

Ah , youth.

K

Regarding zaps someone I know runs a lot of bevs and he regularly replaces terminating resistors, I suggested bypass them with a gas discharge or neon bulb and using higher wattage resistors and see how it fares. That reduced the replacements but for the closest and strongest of zaps.

On the bigger antenna, might have to reduce gain in the sdr to make sure you don't max out the adc. With so much surplus gain designed in most in modern sdr you can stand to add some decimation as well as gain reduction, both will increase dynamic range.

No gain on a discone compared to a 2m/70cm vertical, unless the disconey was huge.
Consider a discone to be a dummy load for rxing, incredibly broadbanded but no gain, some use a amp to help it along.

I think the main diffs between the various brands of discone revolve around construction materials and methods and wether it has a stinger or not. A stinger can help in lower band performance such as for cb or 6m use, some guys put a short dual band element in place of the cb/6m stinger to get some gain there.
