Just above the S9 noise floor here in Binghamton, NY, with some fading to boot - a bit hard to make out.

EDIT: Signal appeared to increase at 0300z - easier to make out the music now (but fading remains).

Sounds like it's in my backyard (Binghamton, NY) - S9+40 and up!

HF Mystery Signals / Amateur mode 3596 kHz - FSK?
« on: July 16, 2021, 0413 UTC »
I'm seeing several frequencies in the 80 meter band with nearly 2 kHz-wide bursts that appear to be some sort of FSK (although none of the sources I'm familiar with, such as SigIdWiki, seem to identify an FSK variant with this wide a bandwidth). Audio clip at https://www.lutins.org/temp/radio/3596.mp3 with waterfall as depicted below. Any ideas? Thanks!

Wow, serious hi-fi USB! Solid 55555 with S9+30 booming into Binghamton, NY.

Oops - my SDR was not adjusted properly - actually quite a strong signal (S8 to S9+3) into central New York State. "Jump" by Van Halen. [Though, pray tell, why play tunes I can hear every day on commercial radio?]

171
Moderate signal with little fading and some static crashes. "Your Love" by The Outfield.

0110 Believe I heard "Goatherder Radio"? Excellent broadcast  (signal clear & fine quality) into central New York State.

So MARS stations are using military-style callsigns now instead of the familiar more-like-amateur-callsigns (like AA2S) that I used to hear years ago?

I am hearing "Net Control" exchanging traffic with various stations such as "Desert Eagle", "Sunspot 05" and "Highcard Sierra". One lengthy exchange involved an "unclassified request for information" to "Send a highway sit rep for the following areas of interest" after which locations on Interstate and State highways in 13 states were identified.

Some of the stations exhibit strong signals (S7 and higher, with low noise & no fading) in Binghamton, NY. The chatter sounds like MARS, but the callsigns don't. Can someone tell me what I'm actually listening to? Sample at https://www.lutins.org/temp/radio/6986.5_2021-05-01_0115z.mp3

One of the loudest, clearest pirate signals I've ever heard in my life! Bandwidth approx. 5 kHz & solid 55555.

Must be my neighbor - S9+35 in Binghamton, NY!

177
Booming in with very slight fading (SINFO 55545) here. Apparently USB, but I'm aware that this station is known for broadcasting in stereophonic AM; if that's the true mode, I'm not sure how to demodulate it properly.

178
Solid (S9+30!) copy here! Maybe about 20 Hz higher than 6930 kHz (?)

179
Solid S9 signal here with some fading amidst moderate static crashes. ID "This is Brownie Radio"

Edit: Announced that he's taking request via HFU!

S9+20 (SINFO 55455) into central New York - excellent quality thanks to relatively wide bandwidth.
