General Radio Discussion / Re: We need a new KUSW or WRNO!!!!
« on: November 25, 2013, 2001 UTC »
I'm having difficulty locating it now, but recently I read in the rules for international stations, that a station located within the USA could not broadcast to its own target zone, ie to the USA.  Most programs targeted toward the USA are broadcast either from the Dutch Antilles, or other islands or continents surrounding the USA.  That is why its called "international broadcasting" after all.  VOA has transmission facilities around the globe, and because of their previous rules pertaining to broadcasting to the American people, its unlikely they have any arrays facing the continent.  Anything heard within the borders of the US is probably due more to antenna limitations than by design.  Also, referring to the rules, omnidirectional antennas are prohibited, so coast to coast coverage would be difficult..legally.

Unless you have lots of money to burn, music on shortwave would probably be a losing enterprise.  So for the time being, we will have piracy ;D

The current situation is partially the fault of legislation.  Its not legal to broadcast on shortwave to the USA from within the USA, so says CFR 47.  Domestic stations that have coverage in the US do so more by accident than design.

I'm behind ya 100% I wish we had several music outlets on SW, but no one wants to pay for it.  At least for now, the best we can do is 'BCQ

Last I checked, all off the shelf TV's still have analog tuners in them as well.  A LOT of small cable systems all over the country are still analog.  In addition, there are still a few analog broadcasters out there.  There is no current "analog sunset" for low power stations.

I believe most "cable ready" TV's these days will pick up a few of the ATV channels.  I had an onboard on a race bike one upon a time and used a VCR to pick the video up off air and record it.  At those speeds, multipath was a bit of a problem.  I think ATV will be around for a while, as long as the FCC doesn't auction off more of the 70CM band.

FWIW, when traveling along the gulf states, Radio Encyclopedia can be heard pretty much every night on a car radio.  I still check it out when traveling around.

If there is one good thing the conversion to digital TV has done for the ATV community, its flooded the surplus market with translators and analog video gear.  I picked up a UHF 1KW tube type translator by TTC for about 200 bucks, complete with a few tubes.  I had to modify it to accept a cable modulator for drive, but otherwise is fully functional.  Audio and video processing gear can also be had quite inexpensively.  I've also got some PA modules from VHF transmitters kicking around, but those are more for local "tom foolery" than anything else.  I thought it might be fun to run movies late at night, but with memory scan tuners, those days are probably gone forever.

The RF Workbench / High Powered Pirates
« on: November 23, 2013, 0307 UTC »
I know KIPM used to run mucho-power back in the day, also Radio Metallica Worldwide was rumored to be running 10KW or better, and WJDI was running a few KW's as well.  Any other notable "high power" pirates come to mind?

About S7 here.  I can hear the occasional "thump-thump" when it comes out of the noise.  Not a peep in the car though.

+1

Back in my TV days, I thought about disconnecting the remote control feeds and patching in a DVD player with something as entertaining on loop...then break the key off in the lock on the way out.

But then again, they're doing a fine job of destroying the station as is.  Digital TV just isn't as much fun :)

Also got a program log/guide.... Is X-FM doing this now after I started doing it?

Sorry to squash your ego, but we've been doing that since the start in 2011.
