Been noticing the huge red sunrises here in MI the past week or so.

Poacher,

See if you can ID the second signal.  If you can determine its frequency it may be possible to calculate which combination of mixing
products are causing what you are hearing.  Sometimes it becomes obvious what signals are causing the mixing, however, most
often you will drive yourself crazy trying to figure it out.

What you are experiencing is not unusual especially on a portable.  They typically have a lot of sensitivity and not much in the selectivity
department... an open invitation for spurious responses.

Good idea on trying the Kenwood.  Its dynamic range specs look so-so but gotta be better than the portable.

Tell them to jam RHC.

All day rain here today in southern MI... got 1" in the official backyard rain gauge.
Can't remember a wetter July... cool too, haven't seen 90 yet this month.
The politicians are racing to the nearest microphone to blame the flooding on
global warming... errr, climate change... errr, maybe they just haven't been
maintaining all the pumps and drains.

It was nice to log the DX at first... then it became a pest.

I've heard Radio Rebelde several times behind KFI on 640 kHz from up here near Seattle.

Nice catch from Seattle.

My guess is that what you heard was a mixing product of a strong AM band station signal (possibly nearby).
450kc is very close to the 455 kc IF typically used in receivers.

Lots more rain this week.  Numerous pop-up t-storms along a nearly stationary frontal boundary.
Some have been real soakers... amazing that the sky can hold so much water.
Many of the small lakes and ponds that were low due to the rather dry Spring are now back to nearly full.
Fortunately no violent WX at this QTH although some nearby areas have flooding or power outages.
The lights have blinked a number of times due to the lightning or wind but the antenna farm has survived untouched.

Four inches of rain yesterday (Friday 6-25-21), 3 inches of which fell last evening in a 1 1/2 hour period resulting in some minor neighborhood street flooding.
Presently raining this morning with more on the way throughout the day into tonight and more tomorrow.
Looks like we get to make up for the relatively dry Spring and Summer so far all in a few days.

The car radio is grounded to the frame in a negative ground automotive system, so even a wire with an alligator clip to the frame somewhere probably would suffice for a ground radial.

That would probably help if your car is parked.  My concern was how to ground a vehicle in motion.  :-\

Weather / eclipse this morning
« on: June 10, 2021, 1129 UTC »
Although the sky was mostly clear, it seemed darker than usual before sunrise this morning maybe due to the sun rising in solar eclipse.
A dense fog rolled in at sunrise which could be a good thing as it will prevent the uninformed from trying to view the eclipse without proper safety equipment.

x2 on the grounding,  although somewhat impractical on a car radio
However, if you are taking along a portable on a mini-DXpedition, consider a provision for grounding.
It will greatly improve performance on LW and MW.

JF,

tnx for the update.

UMP and DE were the only U.S. beacons ever copied here on 338
so with both of those now gone maybe will hear something new.
