been listening on 1490 past several mornings just to see what could be pulled out of the graveyard,
amazing how hard it is to hear anything intelligible in the jumble,
best DX so far...  WBBL (formerly WKLQ) Whitehall MI,  about 170 miles

Got a chance to do some longwave listening over the weekend and heard some of the usual Canadian beacons:
FD, RL, YYW, MO, YTL, QT, YLD, YY, YXL, YKQ, QG, ZHU, SN.
However, was greeted mostly with poor propagation and wall to wall T-storm static.
Surprisingly, 415 CBC Cayman Brac CYM and 198 DIW Dixon NC had good sigs in here,
otherwise nothing heard to the South.
So, gonna say winter longwave season is over for me at this QTH.

Looks like Ontario took a big hit in Phase 3, not hearing these usually strong beacons:

201  ZXU  London
272  YQA  Muskoka
326  VV    Wiarton
382  XU    London
404  ZR    Sarnia

WDJO AM 1480 Cincinnati OH @ 0945Z 300 watts
not very strong but decent signal for 300 watts into Michigan this morning
listened to their Oldies for about 15 minutes before the signal faded away

Heard this one again this morning,
just happened to be listening to the jumble on 1700
when out of nowhere @ 1000Z WEUP appeared with TOH ID,
either the propagation suddenly shifted or
perhaps they are going to daytime power early during
the emergency.

Thanks for the heads up on the Maine station.
50 kw WYLL Chicago pretty much rules 1160  here even
covering more local WCXI, however, there are occasional
deep fades so it may be possible to catch WSKW on sunrise skip
after they go to 10 kw daytime full power

solid sigs into Michigan 1000-1030Z, no QSB, sounds like an urban Gospel format
was listening on 1700 to a faint Mexican format station trying to get an ID (KKLF ?)
when suddenly WEUP came booming in crushing the Mex and a local TIS

sports talker... "... Tom Brady... blah, blah, blah,  Tom Brady... blah, blah..."
good sigs into Michigan 1000Z with occasional deep QSB
a C&W in and out the background along with an oldies,
the oldies station did not match the KZQZ St. Louis online stream,
both of them are unid for now

Amateur Radio / Re: Thoughts on HF verticals
« on: March 17, 2020, 1926 UTC »
The optimum antenna farm would include several antennas of various types.  However, if you have limited space, a vertical can be the way to go.

Verticals in general seem to have a not so good reputation among some hams... "they radiate equally poorly in all directions... blah, blah, blah".
Based on my many years experience with a Hustler 5BTV,  some of that is true.  It sucks on 10 meters and the bandwidth on 80 is real narrow.
However, performance on 15 has been excellent and on 40 it has been phenomenal.

DX Engineering can provide installation guidance as well as parts and accessory support for the Hustler verticals.

The malfunctioning noisy streetlight around here should burn out soon . It's wrecking my listening pleasure

Got a dirty insulator or connection in the neighborhood radiating noise that the utility has not
repaired...  will have to wait until it fails completely before they fix it.   :(

When will the FCC agents go through towns to conduct sweeps of dirty powerline transformers, etc. that seem to wipe out the AM radio band in most every town or city?
