They'll get my 5 gallon thrones when they pry 'em from my cold dead ass.

I'm on the FLOOOOOOR Pigmeat!  ;D ;D ;D

No knobs? Maybe it's the SDR version.

Well, that would figure... since it IS a SchroDingeR box...

363
Quite amazing.  If I remember correctly, Schrodinger's original box required a radioactive gas.  This one only requires AA batteries... and NO knobs!  Technology marches on...

General Radio Discussion / Re: George Zimmerman Not Guilty

What I want to know is why did it take the police 6 WEEKS to arrest him? Here in the UK, even if it was in self-defence, the standard is normally detained at the local nick and questioned by someone of no less then Dec Sgt.

The way I understand it is that after several days of investigation the cops decided it was a righteous shoot.  Charges were only filed after pressure was brought to bear from higher up the food chain, namely federal and state meddling.  I guess the jury came to the same conclusion as the local cops.
Regardless of the trial outcome, I am sure that he will be hounded out of town
No doubt!  There are no winners here...

If it was the He Man he'd be on in USB - "The manliest of all modes".  Right?

ff, don't give up too quickly on the group.  New Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer seems to be trying to address some of the problems that have plagued Yahoo, including rampant slacking off by employees who were permitted to telecommute, but which tends to translate to "paid day off".  By all accounts from industry insiders she has a huge cultural shift to implement to turn the company around.
Lex - thanks for the encouragement.  I have been having the security problems for a couple of weeks now and the tips from all in this thread are MUCH appreciated.  I have some things to try now.  However, my biggest bugaboo with Yahoo that is forcing the group issue I speak of is they are now getting much more proactive at tracking, snooping, and linking.  This greatly threatens anonymity.  I realize they are only playing catch up with Google, Facebook, et al, in their quest to give advertisers better focused ads.  However it shoots the hell out of keeping all my privacy ducks in a row.  I'm focused on building transmitters - not on advanced web security techniques - and have no interest in changing.  I've always considered computers and the Internet to be great tools for whatever one's passion is.  However, when using, maintaining, and upgrading the tool begins to take an inordinate amount of time and energy, maybe its time to rethink, and retool...
the SWL groups tended to be overwhelmed by hams who were incapable of thinking like a shortwave radio listener.
I hear you brother.  Although many if not most in our group are licensed hams, they are pirates FIRST.  I've taken some flack over the years about being too selective with applicants.  But with playing "Katie bar the door" things stay pretty realistic over there.  An example that NEVER works when applying is : "I am an Extra Class Ham".  They lead with the wrong foot... always a dead giveaway...

Thanks everyone for your info and suggestions...

ahhhhh!   It's ***YOU*** who runs that group.  I have been known to do a little something over that way now and then.  I bet group users are a subset of users on this side.

Well moof, ***SOMEONE*** has to run it - :)  I hope that it has helped you out.  It's certainly improved my game by about a thousand percent!  Undoubtedly most of our group are here also.  I hope this thread will get interested parties downloading desired group files now, in the event it does get shut down.  I'd certainly make a group announcement, but why not avoid the rush?  73...

Lex and moof - Thanks for the heads up and the tips.  I echo your concerns about Yahoo's lack of security.  Lately they seem to be focusing their energies on web crawling and intruding on user's privacy.  They have kept me stepping quickly to maintain the small amount of anonymity I still retain.  After 9 years I am seriously considering pulling the plug on the homebrewpirateradio group.  Its too bad.  I wish they would take the high road, but they seem to be wallowing in the same crap-filled mud hole that most of the Internet is happily sinking into.  Financial concerns always win out and the government sits back and rubs its hands with glee...

Boomer is okay by me.  Whatever makes people happy makes the world a better place.

My sentiments exactly, Lex.  Boomer is a brilliant guy who has taught me so much about radio transmitters - I could never thank him enough.  We have had several lonnnnnng conversations, both face to face and phone con.  The neat thing is, if you get Boomer talking about transmitters, all sense of time disappears.  I remember once back in the mid 90s with him on the phone.  By the time we had signed off - FIVE hours had gone by!  I would never have believed it if I hadn't experienced it.  He's one of a kind, and an irreplaceable part of U.S. pirate radio history.  Whether he's still involved or not, he'll always be fondly remembered for his contributions...

Equipment / Re: Looking To Buy - 30-60 watt AM transmitter
« on: May 05, 2013, 0027 UTC »
Hi Bart - I echo redhat, the Johnsons are great performers and EZ 2 modify - I started out years ago with a Valiant.  However, with the resurgence in popularity of AM amongst hams, you'll need to remortgage your house to buy a (complete) unit.  The DX60s are decent, but not Cadillac.  I rebuilt a "B" long ago and I had good luck with it.  As Poet said, underdrive a little bit and you'll have more headroom left over for modulation.  The DX40 is easily modified and the voltages are a bit less lethal (a good starter rig).  However the power output is also less.  I believe the last year for tube info in the ARRL handbook was 1988.    You need to be looking for '88 or before.  60s and 70s handbooks are the best way to go.  You can usually find these older copies at hamfests.  Often sans covers.  RF Parts carries many RF tubes and parts.  Fair Radio Sales is a good source for surplus tuber parts stuff.  If you need transformers and chokes rewound, Peter W. Dahl is expensive but does excellent work.  One more thing - start collecting high voltage caps.  You'll be needing lots of them.  Have fun and be careful...

I really liked what I did and how I did it... I have always believed that it is important to live life big as doing otherwise was like not living at all...

Amen, Ronin!

I only knew you from your signal, which was usually strong, proud, and clean.  I would imagine you to be of similar character.  I am sorry to hear about your situation but I know that your Samurai heart will prevail, and you will get beyond this.  I will certainly miss you occasionally booming in here with your good music shows.  Take good care my faceless friend and 73!

I just entered my "yes" vote too.  On the "why" question, I suggested that most pirates were better verifiers than many of the remaining "legitimate" stations.  So why not give serious coverage to those that still honor reception reports with QSLs?  That would seem to me to be  something worthwhile to the mainstream community also.  Pirates still give feedback to the listeners, regardless of budgets or manpower or current agendas...
