Utility / "Timitone" with radio checks on 8992
« on: April 09, 2012, 0208 UTC »
Andrews working "Timitone" with multiple radio checks (about six) on 8992u at 02:00z.  Timitone I believe was checking different radios/antennas as signal strength varied greatly from one check to another.  "Timitone" is a new call to me if I heard it correctly, pretty sure it wasn't "Timtron" though Timtron working Andrews would have been a pretty neat trick!

Oh my goodness gracious!
Doing my usual monitoring activities while finishing my taxes, minding my own business really, when Andrews hits me with the following EAMS on eight niner at 0:50 z

Now no disrespect intended, this fine patriot is serving our country with honor and is no doubt a far stronger and braver soul than my cowardly self, but that voice!  Maybe its that hint of valley girl inflection (for example, that joyful pronunciation of "sierra" in the second link) that seems so delightfully out of place in a military radio transmission, but she's got that special something.
I'm writing Andrews for an autographed QSL pronto!

At 04:45z picking up unid NET, able to discern ID "Kokomo" attempting to hail "Kedron 47" (Murky on that ID), unable to make out other stations that were active on the net.  Also UNID digital bursts intermittently active on the same freq, not ALE, not one I am familiar with.

Addendum:  Also picking up UNID station nearby 6910LSB, Spanish Speaking.

At 19:46z, 11175u (and the other usual freqs) 6 character EAM   "2PJ2NJ for Fatfish."
Not an ID I've heard before (though if I were fatfish I might be putting in for a cooler handle.  I mean really, who wants to be "Fatfish?")

Utility / Telecomm failure creating tension for NY ATC 13354u
« on: February 05, 2012, 1840 UTC »
At 18:30z on 13354u, NY ATC reporting Paramaribo airspace closure due to telecom failure, now requiring a series of reroutes/clearences etc and attempts at contacting craft that need to be advised. Attempting to get other craft to contact SVW38EX. Not a fun day to be at New York center for sure.

Addendum:  Paramaribo declared open at 19:13z.  Back to biz as usual, otherwise was shaping up to be the wrong week to quit sniffing glue for these guys! ;D

« on: January 15, 2012, 0525 UTC »
Some driving dance music barely making it through the fades here at 05:20z.  Nothing resembling an ID last several minutes, not sure I could make a read if there was one.

Utility / 8602:UNID CW station (spanish)
« on: January 14, 2012, 0053 UTC »
At 00:40z on 8602khz, came across CW station, new to me.  Multipsk reveals Spanish in the mistake ridden decode. A reference to Santa Lucia is about all I can make out as I shamefully cannot speak Spanish.  Perhaps someone has some idea about what this is:

Utility / UNID Net on 5723u (Navy Exercise?)
« on: January 13, 2012, 0442 UTC »
After several weeks of quiet, finding 5723u acive again at 04:26z with calls ID'd EW, K, L.  Also UNID digital transmissions
This has peviously been ID'd as known Naval freq (thanks CM), wonder if current sigs relate to  USS Enterprise (the carrier, not the spaceship I believe) Composite Unit Training Exercise, the COMTUEX was just reported today by the ever reliable Jack Metcalf on his blog:  http://mt-milcom.blogspot.com/

May also simply be a MARS net, though not on my MARS net freq list (also courtesy of Jack Metcalf, he and Hugh Stegman being two of the increasingly few reasons to still purchase the occasional (overpriced and pirate ignoring) Monitoring Times.)
So far hearing calls every 15 min or so, though reception here getting iffy.  .

Utility / WLO seeking reception reports
« on: January 12, 2012, 0355 UTC »
At 03:50z on 8472khz WLO broadcasting news reports in alternating RTTY and NAVTEX.

"WE ARE INTERESTED IN RECEPTION REPORTS OF THESE BROADCAST.  PLEASE SEND
YOUR RECEPTION REPORT TO WLONEWS-AT-OLYPEN.COM"

Not exactly a tough catch from here, but , they didn't specify you had to be on a ship or anything so they got my report.  Wonder if they QSL?

Spy Numbers / UNID CW 6949khz
« on: January 09, 2012, 0019 UTC »
Been hearing weak CW since about 0:00z on 6949khz while searching for a Sunday pirate.  Too weak to get much decode on, possibly 5 letter groups.  Perhaps someone has some idea about this? ???

Addendum:  Still detectable through the noise at 01:32z

Utility / Longwave Aero Beacon Fun
« on: December 26, 2011, 0638 UTC »
Well, nothing much happening on HF tonight, so I dusted off the old LF Engineering LF Active Antenna hook-up. The ol antenna itself has been nobly languishing unused at the top of our treehouse for years, but lo and behold, once fired up the ol boy still worked like a charm and with conditions apparently being favorable for good Dx, I was soon pummeled with more signals than I coud shake a stick at, good for a few hrs fun.  Maybe some Longwaver  out there can explain why the Canadian beacons come in so much better than their American cousins, made for some good Dx.  I'll have to try DGPS before I disconnect the old antenna again.  Seems like a lot of these great beacons are getting decomissioned, enjoy em while you can!
