tiNG, thank you for your response!

Australia would indeed make sense, as propagation would favor regions across the Pacific to the West of me.

HF Mystery Signals / Re: 181059 MHz USB Unknown signal
« on: July 25, 2024, 0046 UTC »
So, this is 18105.9 kHz? That would be in the 17 Meter Ham Band.

I've heard similar bubbly noises on the HF ham bands before, usually 30-50 kHz higher than the FT8 frequencies.

I'm also curious as to what the signals actually are. Some digital ham mode, obviously....

Sounds like it may have been propagating. Any idea of the changes in signal strength?

Hi.

Any recording would help to identify your UNID. Do you have one?

I was able to post two of the recordings (made off my phone) on my blog. Here is a link to the blog. The recordings are like embedded YT vids, more than halfway down the page.

FWIW, it hasn't been on frequency the past couple a.m.'s. Anything more I hear, I may post here. Otherwise, done here.

I'm probably hearing them at night playing modern country underneath a stronger KMTT Portland. Heard modern country last night under KMTT, and the signal faded out around 5 a.m. - 6 a.m. local, which would pencil in somewhat correctly.

All I can say is keep trying. The other two stations I mentioned (the ones in ND & SD) play classic country, not modern country. So that could possibly help with an ID.

That’s too bad, at night time here in BC I often get 910 AM and other stations from Alberta

Understood, as I'm maybe 200 - 250 km S of you. More Canadian stations are going off the AM band. As you're aware, CKGO 730 Vancouver may leave the air later this year, unless they're sold to a new company, and CHQT 880 Edmonton is going the same way.

I remember when CKYL 610 Peace River AB would come in nightly, and then they went FM only. Going FM-only seems to be the Canadian version of the US "revitalization" plan, where AM's got the ability to have an FM translator.

Right now, as I write this, there is some super weak Country, seemingly beaming NE-SW, Brookings, SD) so it could be one of them, although a check of both those stations' streams makes it improbable, as the music on the air I'm hearing doesn't match either stream of the Minot ND or Brookings SD stations.

I have a 10 sec. phone MP4 vid I took of it, last night. Not able to post it here, though. It probably wouldn't help, as phone clips often sound like junk.... It's a phasing jet noise, and occurs after midnight local... It doesn't strike me as RFI because the signal level is not always consistent. If you remember how the 'jet noise' utilities sounded in the 1960s and 70's (some sort of multiplexed communication mode), it's similar.

24
I've heard this several times over the past week, late nights PDT, noticing it after 0800 UTC when I tune into the 20 M band to see if anything is happening.

The noise is just outside the top edge of the 20 Meter Ham band. Can't find any record of what sort of station this might be, although I'm not up on ute signal sleuthing.

It sounds like a jet engine, and it propagates, so I'm pretty certain it isn't RFI. It seems to occupy a wide swath of spectrum, but it's centered on 14356-14357.

Any idea what this is? It's a continuous jet noise. Can't be a jammer, because there is, or was, nothing to jam there.

25
That's good for the station, I suppose, it will give them a few years of life before all Radio goes online 100%, but it's too bad for those of us outside Alberta that listen or used to listen to it.

I recall listening to it a lot on my Realistic TRF while in the writing den, helping my mom with her novel, back in the early 1980's. CKDQ came in really well on 910, opening early in the evening back then. Lately I haven't heard them on 910 very much. 910 here in my corner of the PNW is mostly KMTT Portland.

Peskies / Re: what ami hearing?

I've heard what sounds like Malay or Tagalog in the 30 meter ham band, around 10123-10124 kHz, USB, around 0820 UTC. Weak and undecipherable, but sounds like those languages during fade-ups, with 2-3 guys talking. And I'm in the PNW US -- we get decent reception from Asia here.

So I think what Shortwave_Listener is probably accurate.

MW Loggings / Re: 650 WSRO (MA) Gone Dark (?) WSM Good Instead
« on: July 05, 2024, 0655 UTC »
If one is a MW fan or MW DXer, it's sad when any AM station goes dark, even the ones that tried HD AM. The fact that a station tried HD AM indicated that they at least were attempting to stay relevant, to draw listeners to whatever programming -- at the higher fidelity HD AM gives.

That said, the four local stations in my market that had HD on the AM switched it off by 2017.

And in my corner of the US, the four AM stations that went dark within the last 1.5 years all had streams, and one of them had an FM translator and FM sister station as well. But still, they failed, due to Pandemic-era advertising revenue drops and infrastructure costs. It's tough times for small budget radio stations. Even large budget operations are scaling back. The business model has changed.

WLAC 1510 have been getting out really well. I've logged them 3 times in the past month, underneath KGA Spokane. A couple times I heard ID's in the clear, underneath Ben Maller (KGA). I'm in the PNW. WLAC hasn't been a common visitor in this section of the US.

Another week and I still haven't heard the mystery RTTY. Still am not certain it was an overload image, my Panasonic doesn't overload much, if at all. That said, I'm marking it down as a mystery and won't post more here unless I hear the station again.

It wasn't overload, I heard this as well. Some sort of intruder signal.

Thank you for letting me know you heard it also. II guess I'll keep listening and seeing if it re-occurs.

If you're in BC, we're not too far from each other, and we both have a pipeline to Asia in the a.m......
