Shortwave Broadcast / Re: BBC War Service off 15740?
« on: October 15, 2022, 2148 UTC »
Weren't they relying on WRMI for the relay on that one?

No, 15770 came from WRMI and that was VOA stuff, crowd sponsored

15740 comes form Wooferton

Tuned past WWV and soon after hit 15075 with some weak but very readable music.. and im like "WTF? Nothings usually here.. so i check Eibi, nothing. Soon he announces the name as "Cupid Radio" and gives out the facebook page, I message him and get a few shout outs on the air... AND a few minutes into it, he turns his 3 element beam towards alaska and viola, at 1842UTC the signal gets even better.  Good enough that when i get around to decoding the SSTV, I might have something there to actually decode~! 500 watts.. not bad!

ARESQ AQ1 radio, 2 tunable loops, DXE Preamp and Zoom h1 recorder.

0652UTC Sat Sept 1 and there’s Vanuatu on its 7260 fundamental, though I think they were on a bit too late.

And it just went off at 0659, presumably to move to 5040khz which is next on the list in order of time if you believe their website, vbtc.vu

Nope not on 5040.

Guess where I found them at 0710?

apparently, unsurprisingly.. the hwole of cuba is now without power and probably will be for ahwile, so that means their stuff is off the air

A friend near birmingham, alabama is hearing CHLO near toronto (5300 like a local)

Do you think they could be buying used parts from Radio Cairo? It's a short flight across the Red Sea.

its possible, but im not sure how used parts from Radio Cairo would even be usable.

Nice! I can hear this every morning from here but the splatter from China always makes reception to poor to write for a QSL  >:(

I wonder if China and Vietnam being mortal enemies for centuries plays into the radio interference?

absolutely.. when i lived in alaska the last time a few years ago, id hear their english broadcast sign on at 9730khz, i forget the time. .and a few seconds later, CRI would crash land on 9730 with the most obnoxious music possible and drown them out

Shortwave Broadcast / VOA French 9490kHz
« on: September 25, 2022, 2219 UTC »
Voice of America French 9490kHz via Botswana to Africa was just banging in like a ton of led bricks at 1835UTC in Alaska. S9+30 signal with zero fading or noise, sounds just like a local AM Radio type broadcast signal.

Wednesday night here in the west central interior of Alaska, I logged KMES 1430 Ogden, Utah the spanish religious station in the SLC market. It gets real clear at the 8 minute 30 second mark, the english talk station competing with it is KYKN Keiser/Salem, Oregon.

Here's audio of what I heard:

Shortwave Broadcast / R. Saudi 9650kHz Modulation Problem
« on: September 24, 2022, 1955 UTC »
I've noticed this going on for months now that 9650kHz will have modulation akin to cuba or china, you can tell audio is there.. but you can't make any of it out.
 R. Saudi is usually a very good broadcaster, the only other time i've heard issues is when 15170 or 15285 are on air after 0300UTC and sometimes the audio gets distorted and breaks up.

Here's what 9650kHz sounds like:

DX From Thu night Sept 22

KHHO doing nicely to beat semi local KICY

KKOH wiping the floor with semi local KNOM

XEKAM 950 coming in nicely over never very strong KJR Seattle

KGB 760 mostly loud and clear for a few mintues in the second half of the 9pm hour.

DX for Fri. morning Sept 23

1206 Yanbian was super great most of the morning.  945 was great some of the time. 981 was super great most of the time.  I had CNR1 on 1251 fair well on and off.

I had some Japan stuff, the usual JOHR was mostly great most of the time, JOWF was kinda ok some of the time.   The other Japanese weren’t very good except some of the big guns.

Faint reception, Arabic service per their web site.  First reception of AIR in many months.

1908 OM talking at noise floor, occasional peaks with good reception.
1925 Reception staying consistently over noise floor with verygood peaks but I believe sign off is in 5 minutes
1926 Reception now very good, OM talking at length
1928 Subcontinent music
1929 Off mid-song

i get them quite well here during the farsi service before 1730...  in their usual crispy over modulated goodness
