North American MW Pirate Radio / UNID 1710 AM 0221 UTC 25 JAN 2025
« on: January 25, 2025, 0524 UTC »
Mostly seemed like a dead carrier until a male voice was heard at 0221 UTC with "Hello 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2. This is a test" while thumping on the mic.

Very weak music just above my noise floor with "Gagliarda" by Mannheim Steamroller at 0418 UTC.  Mostly a carrier with occasional bits of music heard.

Presumed Greek pirate?

#1: Carrier first noted coming on 0405 UTC and then off at 0411 UTC.  Very weak as expected into West Michigan, some faint audio heard.

#2: Carrier back on again at 0412 UTC and off at 0420 UTC.  Signal was a little stronger this time with weak Mediterranean music clearly heard.  It was during this block that FlairMax identified the Greek artist Antonis Repanis with the song titled "Apopse Se Thimithika" at 0414 UTC.

#3: Carrier back on again at 0422 UTC and off at 0428 UTC.  Very weak by this time with no discernable audio heard.

The frequency and the one song identified leads me to believe this was a Greek pirate.

At first I assumed this was just another UNID North American pirate popping up in the middle of the night, however a FlairMax hit at 0359 UTC identified a song titled "Paranomi Mou Agapi" by Greek artist Rita Sakellariou.  Greek music heard on my NNE DKAZ loop which favors Trans-Atlantic reception is also more evidence this is pointing to a Greek pirate.  Audio was very weak, just above my noise floor.  Signal was drifting slightly upward.  Carrier dropped at 0408 UTC.

Anyone else catch this one?

This is WPRR in Ada, Michigan.  JW's song list matches my overnight recording 39 miles from their tower.  You should see the carrier hovering around 1680.01

This station has a history of problems and the failure to ID doesn't surprise me at all.

Triumph "Lay it on the line" bubbled up over the noise floor just briefly, very weak for a few seconds and then lost.

This one is being heard again tonight and just as weak as last night with occasional audio peaks rising above the noise floor.

Thanks for the sanity check, Chris.  Further review of my recordings only yielded small bits of music, which was still going when I stopped my recording at 1200 UTC.

Edit 11/23/23: After a second night of hearing this I've finally identified the source of the programming as coming from AM 1580 WWCD "CD 92.9", an alternative rock station in Columbus, Ohio with an FM translator on 92.9.  1580 WWCD programming is parallel to 1550 WQCD in Delaware, OH.  I'm guessing this is some sort of spur or mixing product.

This math may explain it: 1717.68-1580=137.68 kHz & 1717.68-1550=167.68 kHz, 167.68-137.68=30 kHz which of course is the difference between 1580 kHz & 1550 kHz.

This thread can probably be moved.

Very faint music heard on my overnight SDR recording right at the noise floor, carrier measuring 1717.6784 @ 0302 UTC.  This station appeared to be on for several hours but much too weak to discern music genre or much of anything else.  Anyone else catch it?

Loud in Michigan as usual.

1709.9978-1709.9970 (carrier slowly drifting downward) with Man and woman speaking, way down in the static.  Not any of the usual TIS stations.

0045z: Old commercial for Sears Roebuck & Company
0053z: Instrumental music, John Fox "Being with you"
0057z: Live time check and Community Radio Network ID mentioning 1710 and an FM frequency
0100z: Phone number and time pips at TOH
