22 Meter Band HiFER Beacons / Re: New Hifer Beacon "EPA" Operational

Is the ID "EPA" sent continuously, or is there a delay before it repeats?

HF Beacons / Re: New HiFer "SPT" Beacon on 13558KHz
« on: November 16, 2015, 0749 UTC »
SPT was heard briefly today by a hiker in Pike National Forest - a direct distance of about 900 miles. I think that's pretty good for 4.6mW into a dipole. Makes you wonder what a 100mW beacon could do. I'm too chicken to break the rules though, so I'll have to imagine!

Thank you for listening, jFarley and Frank. I believe that FRC (which is also in Northern California) has been heard in all 50 states, but I imagine it has a much better location for it's antenna installation than SPT, being in a broadcast transmitter building. I'd be surprised (yet overjoyed) if either of you gentlemen were to hear SPT.

Nice to see you on here Frank :-) Mingus is the name of our neighborhood cat, hence my screen name.

HF Beacons / Re: New HiFer "SPT" Beacon on 13558KHz

Thanks for trying William, and thanks for the input Dag. Unfortunately, 13558 is the lowest I can pull the crystal, though it will pull as high as the top of the ISM/HiFer band. I don't want to make any changes yet, until I get more feedback, but am very willing to move the frequency above 13560 if it seems that would work better.

Something like an S4 or S5 here in the SF East Bay on my homebuilt regen.
Nice quality modulation.

Woa! MC 900 Foot Jesus "The City Sleeps" at 0258z - a great song about what goes through the mind of an arsonist. I'm a convert to this station!

PS - thanks for the shout-out!

HF Beacons / New HiFer "SPT" Beacon on 13558KHz
« on: November 01, 2015, 0142 UTC »
Hi there -

I just put a new HiFer beacon on the air. It sends "SPT" on 13558KHz at about 6wpm continuously. with a power of 4.6mW into the antenna, an L-shaped half-wave dipole at 25 feet.
It has been heard with a 239/339 in Portland, OR, a little over 500 miles away, and I'd love to know if anyone else can hear it.

I just happened to tune in to what must have been the tail end of this transmission. Poor quality modulation and a weak signal into the SF East Bay. All I heard was one song before the carrier dropped. Feel a bit sheepish that I can't name the tune as it is a well-known comic/goofy popular tune (from a TV show, possibly).

I wonder if anyone caught this on the West Coast?

7
Where on the West Coast are you BOR? I'm in the SF East Bay, and it's a weak signal here - about an S2 on my homebuilt regen receiver. I can tell it's there, but can't make out much.

Hearing Rockwell "Somebody's Watching Me" at 0130z
Stevie Wonder "Superstition" at 0133z
UNID song (possibly due to weak sigs, or just my poor music knowledge) at 0137z
Blue Oyster Cult "Don't Fear The Reaper" at 0142z
UNID song at 0147z
Thomas Dolby "She Blinded Me With Science" at 0153z
Talking Heads "Psychokiller" at 0157z
Rolling Stones "Paint It Black" at 0201z
Michael Jackson "Thriller" at 0205z
The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again" at 0212z
UNID song at 0221 (weak sigs)
Prince "Let's Go Crazy" at 0230z
Santana "Black Magic Woman" at 0235z
UNID song at 0239z
Signal a little stronger at 0250z here in the SF East Bay.

HF Beacons / Re: 28277.6ish USB Beacon 1601 UTC 29 OCT 2015
« on: October 30, 2015, 1615 UTC »
When the 10M band is open, you'll hear many beacons in the 28200 - 28300 segment. As the operators are hams, I'm sure many would be open to sending QSL's. I recently e-mailed a brief reception report to N0AR for his beacon on 28255 and received an e-mail response, complete with a picture and description of the set-up. Other e-mail reports, to other operators, have gone unanswered. I don't collect QSL's, and my only motivation for sending reports is to let the operators know their beacons are being heard, though I do like to at least get an acknowledgement, or some kind of response. If you want a physical QSL, I'd think that mailing them a reception report with a self-addressed and stamped envelope would maximize your chances of receiving a physical QSL. If you have access to the QRZ database, many beacon operators give info about their beacons on their QRZ page, and QSL information may be part of that. You could also try a google search, as some hams have sites describing their beacons.

Not all hams send QSL's though. It's up to the individual operator.

Yes, "A" is reported to be out of AZ.  It is also probably one of the highest powered High Frequency Beacons in regular, and prolonged, use.

T!
Good to know. Thanks Token.

HF Beacons / Re: A 2097 CW 1040 UTC 29 Sep 2015
« on: October 02, 2015, 0707 UTC »
Am pleased as punch to be receiving it weakly, yet clearly, on my newly built regen. It is now 0700z (midnight local time in the SF East Bay) on 10/02. It comes through a little more clearly on my K2 but to copy it almost as well on a homebuilt regen makes me feel like a proud Dad.

I haven't tried any of the beacons around 4096-ish recently. I took me a while to get the regen tuned up precisely on 2097.3, so I want to enjoy the fruits of my labors by listening for a while :-)

Initially very weak signal into the SF East Bay, but did just copy the ID, at 0405z, 905pm local.
One More Time by Daftpunk at 0410z
1984 by Eurythmics at 0418z
Walk This Way by Run DMC at 0462z
Voice break at 0430z
Planet Claire by B52's at 0432
Song I couldn't ID at 0436z
Insane In The Brain by Cypress Hill at 0440z
You Spin Me Round by Dead Or Alive at 0444z (I fixed Pete Burns' TV once, back in the 80's)
Voice break at 0450z
Promises Promises (awesome!) by Naked Eyes at 0450z
Friday I'm In Love by The Cure at 0454z
Station ID at 0457z
Song I couldn't ID at 0457z
In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins at 0505z (great drum sound that was recorded in a room with very thick stone walls at Richard Branson's place).
Station promo at 0510z
Possession by Sarah Mclachlan at 0510z
White Lines (Don't Do It) by Melle Mel at 0516z (accreditation when originally released was to Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel, but Grandmaster Flash actually had nothing to do with this record)
Station ID at 0523z
Song I couldn't ID at 0523z
Another song I couldn't ID (aaargh - my musical knowledge, and the signal strength, is failing me!) at 0527z
I think I heard an ID in the middle of the above song, at 0532z
Station promo with e-mail address at 0534z
Oh! I know this song, but can't quite figure out what it is, and it's really bugging me because I like it! (if the signal was just a bit stronger, I know I could hum it and get it!) at 0534z
Dancing with Myself by Billy Idol at 0538z
Station ID at 0541z
Real Wild Child By The Igster at 0541z
Another one I can't figure out at 0545z. The fact that my blind cat jumped up on the desk and knocked the regeneration control didn't help either :-)
Station ID at 0549z
Let's Go Crazy by Prince at 0549z
A friend called me, and I never heard the end of Let's Go Crazy, but at 0558z I am detecting a very weak carrier but no modulation (which may even be from another station). Not sure if they are still on the air at this point.

Thanks for a great show. Lots of fun!

Thanks Oliver. I think I knew that, but spaced it. I follow Thomas' blog and now remember seeing this post.

Thanks for the reminder!

13
Thank you Oliver. It comes through loudly on the Mojave Desert receiver at www.globaltuners.com so that might be some sort of indication as well. I only listened for it the first time a few nights ago, but have received it weakly yet consistently all night for the last 2 nights.

You just reminded me that I probably ought to subscribe to MT - have often thought of doing that.

14
Still weak yet clearly readable 7 hours later at 1230z (5:30am local and still in darkness here). Looks like it may be a regular nighttime catch from my location.

HF Beacons / A 2097.3 CW 0500 UTC 24 Sep 2015 into Northern California
« on: September 24, 2015, 0509 UTC »
This is my first post. Hello! I don't expect to be posting very often, but you never know................

The A beacon is coming through very weakly into the SF Bay Area - about an S1, though perfectly Q5, as there is no QRM.

Does anyone know where this beacon is, or how much power it runs, what kind of antenna, etc?
