HF Beacons / Beacon at 4.056 Mhz
« on: March 12, 2011, 0049 UTC »
Heard a Beacon today on 4.056 Mhz at 1:15 pm East cost time here at my QTH in Coeburn VA, seemed to be a dasher, was very loud at times then would fade, lost it around 1:50 pm east cost time, is this a known Beacon?  tried to make a recording but I messed that up.

HF Beacons / Re: good for beacon??

I do like to build stuff, can you link me a site that had a recommended circuit, im interested in building a simple dasher beacon for 1st project. im assuming something like a 555 timer would make a great simple keyer for this.

General Radio Discussion / ICOM 718 Pirate Friendly??
« on: August 10, 2009, 0723 UTC »
got a Icom 718 HF all band transceiver, ok here is the deal, It will broadcast on 6925 USB ??? and according to the manual and Icoms website its not suppose to be able to broad cast anywhere near there.

Ive just passed my armature tests for general class so ive not actually transmited into anything but a dummy load so I could test the rig out.
needless to say I almost pissed my pants when I noticed it actuall put out full power at that frequency, now other frequency's like the CB band around 27 mhz that its not suppose to transmit at it didnt, rig told me to kiss off, it simply refused to TX

so im sorta at a loss as to why it would transmit at 6925 when its not suppose to??? I know you can mod this rig to transmit on any freq with the removal of like 3 surface mount diodes but that would make it transmit on ANY of the HF which it dose not.

the radio is brand new, im the 1st owner, is this normal for this rig or have I got a "Special" unit somehow LOL

Left the SDR IQ recording overnight got something pretty interesting

starting at around 4 am east coast time, sorry haven't figured out the whole UTC time thing yet but im working on it :-)
played 5-7 songs and it ended I wanna say around 6 or 7 am with "Walking in Memphis" then off the air, noise picked up pretty bad at this point because by now it was getting daylight or had already started.

over all it was a fairly strong signal, went over the recording real quick so far heard no ID played during this time period.

I will post the whole recording later, must get back to college work for now.

Casablanca Radio ID, Here is a shot clip from the recent Radio Casablanca, hear most of the show, cool music from the 40's era, lots of static crashes though from all the storms in the area. was able to record this radio ID fairly clear though.

http://rapidshare.com/files/245779004/moronco.wav

this next one is from the end of tonight's transmission from dead cat radio, its there radio ID in CW, again lots of static crashes from all the damn storms.

http://rapidshare.com/files/245779430/Dead_Cat_Radio_ID_CW.wav

both were received with a SDR-IQ with an 85 foot end feed long wire with a 9:1 balun.
I'm located in Southwest Virginia

nice radio the Sony 2010 has became legendary, heard nothing but good stuff about that radio.

glad you have the RF system EMF antenna, ive been thinking of getting one myself and putting it on about 20 feet of mast but wanted to know if it was worth the money, the long wire I have 85 feet goes right under a high power line eeeck I know but its the only place I had room for a 85 foot run of wire, the 9:1 balun really helps with some of the noise though

so was looking to place the rf systems away from the line on a mast to get away from the noise, is it worth the $250??????
