Utility / Re: What Is That Wideband 4.5mhz - 5mhz signal??
« on: April 29, 2018, 1646 UTC »
Thanks for the reply Token. Man, that sure makes a mess of a large section of spectrum.
I wonder how this could be legal with the ITU?

This is a radar, but not an OTHR really, although yes, it does see beyond the horizon.  This is a specialized coastal radar called CODAR.  CODAR monitors wave action and coastal ocean currents.  There are literally hundreds of CODAR installations around the world.

T!

I'm getting back into UTE dxing after being away for many years... So I'm tuning around the 4.5mhz - 5mhz area, hearing this wide band "zeewosh, zeewosh, zeewosh" at about one second intervals. Reminded me of the old OTH radar interference. What the crap is this crap??  :P :P

Good Q5 (audible) copy here in North Central NC. Very little qsb. Another dusk reception. Possible gray line propagation at work?

Thanks for the report Mateo. Glad it's making it to St Louie!

Heard near St. Louis, MO at 1600 UTC on 4/3/2018

Only S-1 to S-2 but still clear.

Are you referring to my beacon? RF?

FYI.... I'm not using a "black cat circuit"

I suspect that the Black Cat circuit is putting out much more power then the part 15 Fcc rules allow...
Therefore that's why some of these beacons are being heard quite often.  I did not realize that getting a Hifer page up on HFU would
create this situation.

Woah! I must be doing something right!.  :D

Thanks for the report Tesla. I've been home with the flu this week and I've been turning off the beacon to listen for others. So far nothing although my transmitting antenna probably makes for not such a good (noisy) receive antenna. I'll try another listening session again today.

Feb 27 Time 1417 utc   Q5  RF only beacon heard...

Ah yes... "uncle Charlie" or the Federal Candy Company...  ;D..

I was on CB for brief time during the 70's. We all had handles, no "legal" callsigns were used. Very few would dare to use a linear.

I had my novice license at the time....liked CB because I could use voice instead of just CW on the ham bands. Upgraded my license, dumped the chicken band ops.

Any old folks out there (like me) remember the KW SSB group out of Long Island back in the 1970's?

Is that foam from an IPA in your avatar?

Later this spring/summer I'll get a properly nourished antenna in the air for this beacon. But I'm hoping someone might be able to catch it as it is now.

It's all good!. Changing word meanings is fun!  ;D

This was starting to reach the level of the JTA-Radio Bob battle over whether a dipole was a balanced or unbalanced antenna. I don't think anyone gave a crap but those two? They certainly proved they were unbalanced for arguing about it the way they did.

That little episode was the birth of a decade plus of on and off "Pirate Wars".

Great to hear it Beer... I'll shut my beacon off this weekend and give a listen.

BEER is back on the air. I added a cap at C16 to move the freq up. BEER is now at 13566 KHz.

Thanks for the report Tesla. very glad to hear RF is getting out. Maybe it's that "end fed dipole" I'm using.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Time 2347 utc RF 13564. 247  Khz was copied and was very weak. No other beacons heard.
A new active region numbered 2699 is now turning into view off the east limb. It is currently producing minor B-Flares and also managed a low level C-Flare.  We might see an increase in solar flux and maybe some Hifers will be heard as well.

Receiver: Icom 756
Antenna Doty Low Noise 9:1 transformer  45 ft long  and 7ft above the earth.

You're wrong but I understand, you want to call an apple a pear. No problem!  ::) ::) ::)

... but back to the original post, there is no such thing as an end fed dipole.

And the responses of a halfwave antenna operating at the frequency of resonance, "dipole" or end fed, are exactly the same, radiation angles, the same current and voltage minima and maxima at the same points along the length of radiator, etc.
