Utility / Halifax Coast Guard Radio on 2749 (!)
« on: February 01, 2022, 0245 UTC »
Loud clear signal despite high noise (SINFO 55355) on 2749 kHz at 0240z on 1 Feb 2022. Twice announced "Halifax Coast Guard Radio" followed by French (unknown content - I don't speak French) then marine forecast in English. Nothing out of the ordinary - except - in my log notes I notated a while back, "discontinued September 2010". Are my notes wrong, or was the station resurrected?

Strong buzzing jammer is fading in & out on same frequency (guessing location is China); Tibetan language broadcast from Lhasa, Tibet can be heard intermittently during jammer fades

Solid S9+20 here with virtually no fading. Very high fidelity - bandwidth appears to be in excess of 3.5 kHz. Tune is "Energy Flow" by Dhamika (thank you Shazam!).

Even though I have a clear signal and proper bandwidth (3 kHz), I can't get SSTV images to synchronize properly (MMSSTV on Win 10 - autodetects as Scottie 1). I've tried several different input volumes. Used to work before I replaced my hard drive & reinstalled everything :/   Maybe an MMSSTV setting?

Nice solid signal here (SINFO 55455); maybe a hair distorted (signal overdriven). Couldn't get a good lock on the SSTV image at 0125.

EDIT: Forgot to widen out bandwidth to full 3 kHz (was set to 2.8 kHz); quality is better, and maybe I'll get a better fix on the next SSTV image.

Shortwave Broadcast / Radio Ethiopia? 7110 AM 0410 UTC 16 Jan 2022
« on: January 16, 2022, 0424 UTC »
Moderate signal in upstate NY, northeastern U.S.  I'm usually pretty good at identifying a language or language group, but this one stumps me. Suspect Ethiopia Radio (in Amharic), but ShortwaveSchedule.com et al state that this station is only on 1500-1800. Heard what sounded like news for a while, eventually transitioned to music. There is occasional interference from hams. Voice sample at https://www.lutins.org/temp/sdr/7110_AM_16-Jan-2022_0405z.mp3, music sample at https://www.lutins.org/temp/sdr/7110_AM_16-Jan-2022_0417z.mp3

Signal S9+5 to S9+15 here. Decent fidelity for sideband (apparently 3 kHz bandwidth).

143
Decent signal despite heavy noise (SINFO 55244). Techno? dance music.

EDIT: Doors "Break on Through" @ 0118 UTC - now booming in (55355)

@Bali_Frank Your signature line says (and your handle implies) you're in Bali - surely you didn't hear the same signal halfway around the world? Maybe you were using a networked SDR? I didn't have a chance to check out any networked radios as it was dinner time on my side of the world.

145
Medium to weak signal (heavy fading) with high noise level; can barely make out music.

146
Oops - you are correct -  I got used to being UTC - 4 in the Eastern time zone, but now that we're off DST it's UTC - 5

Signed off at 0035 as "North American Pirate Relay Service" - so is this the true ID, and "WLIS" was just the content they were relaying?

Yes ..... NAPRS@protonmail.com  (clobdell)

OK, it's WLIS - We Love Interval Signals, and the QSL address is definitely Blue Ridge, PA. Just heard some audio excerpts from "The Prisoner", one of my favorite TV series of all time :)

Through heavy fading, I heard "Interval Radio - we love interval signals" and "The best interval signals of the 60's, 70's and 80's" (or something to that effect). Also, several addresses given out (for QSL?) including ones in Canada, New York and Pennsylvania. Not hearing on networked radios in the midwest nor New England.

Just came on the air (@ 0000z ?) - audio's a bit weak, but ID sounds like "WLIF". Voices only (no music) but too much QRN to make out what I'm hearing.
