With the power lines being so damned noisy here in Troy, Ohio they would do good to get speeds up to 5 bytes per hour...  Time Warner already has the air ways around here too... their crappy cables leakage is so bad that ^^%$$##%%^**((()&*&%$@#$%^&*()

so there!

I had one turn purple color on me... maybe too much mercury...  acted and sounded like  an old mercury vapor tube... kept it but I don't know why...  it's in a box well hidden from the Lady of the house.

Here in Ohio signal is peaking at S8 full copy with deep fades that don't interfere with intelligibility.  It does appear to be movie audio but because I don't watch movies often I have no clue as to what it is..

I am rolling tape tho and a CW ID is up right now... will post audio here in a minute.  vw

Here is my audio clip...

Sorry I didn't even fine tune the radio as I was not expecting this ;-)

The RF Workbench / Re: TA7642 AM radio chip

Hi Zazzle!  Thanks for your reply :-)

Your input is great-fully taken and fills in a few holes on the situation.

I didn't plan to do any serious work with the chip it's just one of those lets see what the thing can do <heh>  As in when winter gets boring and everything else just isn't in the play list.

I do have an IF stripe I built and am having great fun with... that is for a more serious receiver.  It's a dual stage cascade thingie and has a lot of gain at the moment I have the strip tuned to approximately  9500khz and it is wide band.  When I hook an antenna to the mixer input I receive everything from 9000 to 10000khz.  but I digress...

I'm going to find out what this chip can do and that does not necessarily mean what the thing was designed for.  I can't imagine a commercial receiver being built and sold with such a chip but some folks will buy most anything.  Perhaps the intent was for rural areas with a single local transmitting station?  I've live in such areas and this would be a cheap alternative to a more costly receiver. Who knows? <heh>

The wide band part of this item is giving me a few ideas but more on that when I get going with the proto, from the original intent to what I hope might work :-)

Thanks again

The RF Workbench / TA7642 AM radio chip
« on: September 27, 2016, 0223 UTC »
Has anyone played around with the TA7642 AM radio chip?  I've been digging around in my junk box and found a few of these chips and figure it might make a nice winter project. Not just for AM radio but for a cute/small AM unit for what few SW broadcasters left...

What say folks...???

HF Beacons / UNID beacon 7999.5 CW 0121 UTC 27 Sep 2016
« on: September 27, 2016, 0121 UTC »
I am hearing a beacon on 7999.50khz with a 712 Hz tone with 18 beeps per.  Fading at times but with a good signal.

My recording of this is located at:

http://www69.zippyshare.com/v/ped0Qir2/file.html

Hope this helps as I haven't had much luck with beacons.  Hearing on a random length low height horizontal E/W using a MFJ-945E Tuner (POS)  the vertical 20m ant hears nothing here in Troy, Ohio.

I've heard of those so-called fixed frequency radios distributed by certain missionary groups.  Frankly, that infuriates the heck out of me.  Way to hold intended converts unfairly in thrall.  Yecch!  If I had the resources and the know-how, I'd happily assist in the un-fixing of a few fixed frequency receivers, if the owners of same so desired.  Gah, the injustice wrapped in faux righteousness of that one really gets up my schnoz!

As for Brother Scare/Stair, BS filters+missing chompers=one impossible to understand hatemonger.  Smirk!

Fixed frequency radios?  Gahhhhh!

Time to proto a tunable frequency converter for those things...

Wait!!!  I just figured out that Brother Stair doesn't speak Spanish...  So why can't I understand a damned word he says?   Must be the BS filters inside my head are working properly.... Yeahhhhh!!  Works for me folks...

I love it when a plan comes together!!!  ::)

BS filters work for me so everyone should have one installed!  Get inside your head...  :P

Later all.

Have a good day and a better tomorrow!

General Radio Discussion / Re: Smart electric meters
« on: September 13, 2016, 1506 UTC »
I got one years ago, when the local power company first began the switch. No problems with rf.

I did have a problem with the coot who installed when he took the old one off. He gave me the fish eye and said "You been screwin' with this meter?" I said "Why don't you ask the fella who put it back on when one of your bucket trucks ran into the sagging power line in the big snowstorm last winter?" He goes,"Oh yeah, that did happen here, didn't it?" He turned out to be a pretty nice guy. He didn't like the bucket truck guy either.

Hey Pigmeat it isn't like one guy I know who had his meter put in upside down...  I guess he wanted the power company to pay him for using all those electrons ehhhhh???
