Huh? / The DX community has lost a great man, Martin Peck
« on: March 07, 2015, 2133 UTC »
I met Martin last year at the winter swl fest and was very fortunate to have. He loved talking about radio and had such a love for languages and exotic music. He passed away on Feb 28th, the night of the last day of this year's winter fest. Anyone else who has known Marty knows the loss is tough, he was quite a kind and intelligent man. He died of cancer, and was 58.

General Radio Discussion / Global 24 Signs off
« on: March 06, 2015, 1406 UTC »
*funeral march playing in background*

We are gathered here today to remember a beautiful station. Global 24 was unable to pay its bills, but it sacrificed its life to revive shortwave's life. May it rest in peace.

*sounds of weapons and cries of "whhyyy?"

Okay maybe I made it a bit more dramatic, but in all seriousness,
It's a damn shame.

General Radio Discussion / Join the DPRK Radio Station Monitors
« on: February 15, 2015, 1548 UTC »
On facebook, join this group- https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-DPRK-Radio-Station-Monitors/694772840601520 and anytime you log a station from the DPRK (North Korea)- post it there!

I think this is an important aspect of SWL'ing, not just logging stations, but paying attention to rouge nations radio, such as N.Korea.

What I mean is, will there be a new chain of stores that make up for the loss of of radioshack? Do you think the new stores will be more keen on RADIO, and not CELL PHONES. Call it "waveshack"

For my sake, I hope so.

Picking up a nice, strong signal and ID of what sounded like Radio Mufalentz, but I don't speak Dutch so I could be totally wrong.

Signed off at 1626, or at least announced he is. Song is still playing currently.

FM Free Radio / Pirate on 94.9
« on: February 01, 2015, 1609 UTC »
Getting a very well-produced sounding show here in Haddon Heights, NJ. Style is hispanic/ Caribbean sounding with callers and hosts talking above the music. Signal is strong in spots and weaker in others. But by the overall strength of the signal, I figure that the tx is somewheres around the Camden area. There is also a tx on 101.7, but NJ1015 makes it impossible to hear it.

Caught the buzzer for the first time ever using my Tecsun 660, and not the twente SDR.
Signal was way in there, but flipped to USB and heard it clear.

I'll be discussing how I got into radio DX'ing in the age of internet and smartphones. I'll try and make it interesting haha. Try and stop by on Feb 27 at 7pm.

PLAINWELL, Mich. (WOOD) — A small-town AM radio station is back on the air after online criminals held the owner’s computer for ransom.

WAKV, which serves Allegan and Kalamazoo counties, is run out of the basement of owner Jim Higgs’ 144-year-old home in Plainwell.

“Our format is basically old, old music for old people,” Higgs said.

On Jan. 9, crooks used software called “ransomware” to remotely shut down the computers Higgs uses to get his station on the air. His files were encrypted so he couldn’t get to them.

“Our entire music library, the audio files, all of our jingles, all of our commercials, all of our announcer voice tracks — everything locked,” Higgs listed. “There was an icon on my screen and it said that, ‘We have locked up your files and if you want them unlocked then you will have to pay us $500.'”

WAKV was off the air for more than a day before Higgs found a way to get around the problems using an old computer that had his music on it. He has spent hours retrieving his billing and tracking information, with an unknown number of hours of work still ahead.

“People have said this for years: They told me this for years, back things up, back things up. Well, this is why,” Higgs said.

Higgs says he doesn’t remember clicking on anything suspicious that would have infected his computer.

“I guess I would like to see them in jail, but I don’t think that is going to happen,” he said of the digital crooks.

To protect yourself from ransomware and other malware, avoid clicking on pop-up ads or windows, emails from senders you don’t know, and shady websites. Keep your firewall turned on and run reputable antivirus programs regularly.

General Radio Discussion / Is Radio Metallica Worldwide Back?
« on: December 31, 2014, 1351 UTC »
According to a facebook report, yes! Someone has logged them, or another station pretending to be them, at around 2300z with no date given. So I reckon yesterday (12/30/14).

Chris, have you copied RMW recently?

Globaltuners catch from Hong Kong, hearing the usual female propaganda stuff. Kim is Love, Kim is Life haha.

I just thought of this, why do they even have SW radio from 2350kHz- 6100? They barely propagate well, and plus no one in the DPRK have radios, not to mention shortwave radios!
