The RF Workbench / DJ Mixers
« on: November 11, 2013, 1254 UTC »
My old Radio Shack Mixer board turned 20 this last year, and although still working, is developing more bugs and quirks as time goes on.  Its time to start looking for a replacement.  I took a look at the latest RS offering.  Its all pretty with bells and whistles galore, but I was shocked to see how horribly cheap the channel faders are.  Anyone know of any robust DJ mixers out there - especially in the <$300 category?  I'm looking for one with at least four stereo inputs... thanks!

Longwave Loggings / Up with the dog logs
« on: November 08, 2013, 1604 UTC »
I rarely venture into the LW bands but the dog had me up at 0930 UTC (11-8-13), so since the Mr. Winter is starting to creep in, I did the Radio Limbo and found a few:

198 KHz DIW - Dixon, NC
216 KHz CLB - Wilmington, NC
245 KHz ALP - Elmira, NY
250 KHz UL - Montreal, Quebec
260 KHz PYA - Penn Yan, NY
272 KHz YQA - Muscoca, Ontario

These sigs came to the R8 only through the dipole cut for 6900 KHz.  Nothing special, I know, but it sure made getting up at that hour worthwhile!

The RF Workbench / LULU Modulation article posted in 30 Below
« on: September 07, 2013, 1613 UTC »
Puff, puff, puff, pant... pant... whew!  It took some time but I finally posted the conclusion to Building the Basic LULU on 30 Below.  If you've been waiting, I apologize for the delay.  Two weeks of jury duty really put me behind on everything.  I hope you'll find it worth the wait.  Enjoy!

Another VERY useful part (for 12V audio amps and modulators) bites the dust and I am sorry to see these go.  I just received this notification from Digi-Key:

The RF Workbench / Feel like building something?
« on: August 06, 2013, 1639 UTC »
If your soldering iron keeps giving you wistful looks when you walk by, I'd like to suggest an easy transmitter project.  I have posted build plans for the RF section of the LULU transmitter on the 30 Below blog.  I'll be following up with another post discussing techniques to AM modulate it.  I hope you try it.

The RF Workbench / Welcome to the Dark Side
« on: July 30, 2013, 2355 UTC »
Hi all,
Chris has graciously made space available here for discussions about building gear, operating gear, antennas, portable operation, care and feeding of battery packs, and, so, much, more.  This is the sort of thing the homebrewpirateradio group has been doing for nearly ten years.  And now the doors have been thrown wide open.  Hopefully some open discussions from the operators side will bring more cooperation and experimentation, AND entice some new voices onto the airwaves.  Have fun...

MW Loggings / 570 AM Radio Reloj 11/17/12 0605 UTC
« on: November 17, 2012, 2033 UTC »
Just like Chanter, I found last night's MW propagation to the south to be awesome.  Radio Reloj from Santa Clara Cuba fought with WMCA 570 for at least an hour at my QTH. This is an amazing logging, since I'm only about 150 miles from New York City.  Perfectly readable Spanish at times, and always that clock tick-tick-ticking away in the background.

Also a first for me at 0440: 1370 WTAB in Tabor City, NC.  This one is a little over 600 miles from me and according to the database, they only run 109 watts at night... lotsa fun!
