North American Shortwave Pirate / Toynbee Radio 6925.66 AM 0054 UTC

Sign on with OM, the voice sounds like the Toynbee op. Into some music, and then the OM back again at 0059 UTC. Toynbee Radio ID at 0100z. Into more music, OM back at 0103z with possibly another ID, off at 0104z.

The signal was around S9, but the static levels were in the S7 to S8 range.

Came on with instrumental music shortly after Laser Hot Hits went off the air. Very strong signal, S9 or better. Off at 0509z.

Back on at 0518z with the same style music, with an electronic type voice over it. Off at 0524z.

General Radio Discussion / Interception of communications over unencrypted Wi-Fi networks is permissible

An Illinois federal district court recently analyzed the Wiretap Act as it applies to packet sniffing and held that "the interception of communications sent over unencrypted Wi-Fi networks" does not violate the statute.

"Unless and until Congress chooses to amend the Wiretap Act, the interception of communications sent over unencrypted Wi-Fi networks is permissible."

General Radio Discussion / Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON)

Astronomy forums are buzzing with speculation about newly-discovered Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON). Currently located beyond the orbit of Jupiter, Comet ISON is heading for a very close encounter with the sun next year. In Nov. 2013, it will pass less than 0.012 AU (1.8 million km) from the solar surface. The fierce heating it experiences then could turn the comet into a bright naked-eye object.

Signal much weaker by around 0600z. Barely there by 0645z.

Other / Slowly unravelling the 6925 mixing product

I often notice some sort of image or mixing product on 6925 kHz AM on my SDR recordings, usually in the 0400-0900 time period.

Overnight, at 0657z, I got an ID of Scriptures for America. This appears to be carried by WWRB on 5745 khz from 8 PM to 7 AM CST according to http://sfawbn.com/.

At 0700 I heard "broadcasting from near the banks of the Upper Cumberland River... Tennessee, USA" does anyone know which US SWBC station uses this phrase? I am guessing either WWRB or WWCR. Probably the former.

Just signing on now with 2001 theme music. Not bad reception for 18 MHz at this time of the morning. Weak, but low noise levels, so good overall.
