After years of waiting and months of consultation – the UK finally gets legal AM and SSB CB Radio effective from the 27th June 2014.

In a consultation document published this morning by the UK regulator OFCOM the following statement was issued:

Allow two different Amplitude Modulation (AM) modes of operation (AM double side band and single side band) to be used for Citizens’ Band (CB) Radio on a licence-exempt basis in accordance with our decision in our “Statement on Citizens’ Band (CB) radio published on 10 December 2013 (the ‘CB Radio Decision’)”

Ofcom has made these changes to allow all mode operation in the CEPT band (sometimes referred to as the mid block or midband channels).  It is worth noting that that this change does not apply to the exclusive UK 27/81 frequencies which will still only permit FM operation.

SDR recording catch. Weak at sign on, but getting stronger over time. Pretty good by 0530, and S8 by 0600.
0647 ID and off

SDR recording catch. Very good signal at sign on, S9+10. Stayed strong until just before 0600z when the signal started to crash. Much weaker by 0620, but still audible.

Noted here as well on the SDR recording, starting at 0319. Good signal, SIO 444.

SDR recording catch. Same details as the others, quite weak here at 0251.
0303 Much stronger music, possibly a different station?
0312 Music heard on 6928 also, while 6930 was still running.

Generally quite weak / mostly inaudible on the SDR recording, but some peaks around 0245-0300z.

I've heard these types of transmissions before, they seem to come and go. Every so often, for example, LINK-11 will set up around 6945.  I've also heard ALE on 6925 USB, supposedly from Israel.

My guess is with the proliferation of SDRs, we're better able to spot these transmissions.

About at S7 signal, sounds like one old time radio program just ending.

I agree conditions have generally not been great, but last night we had a nice (for summer, anyway) opening to Europe on 48 meters here on the east coast. Very good signals from three Europirates at the same time.

SDR recording catch. First noted around 0404z, with a weak signal. Slowly improved over time. Not too bad by 0530z. Quite nice by 0630z, SIO 333.

Off at 0904z.

Thanks for the show, RTN!
