North American Shortwave Pirate / Radio Ronin Shortwave 6955 AM
« on: June 12, 2011, 0123 UTC »
6/12/11
6955 AM
0123z: AC/DC "You Shook Me All Night Long", Radio Ronin Shortwave ID, Queen "Fat Bottom Girls", ELO "Turn to Stone", Moody Blues "Knights in White Satin", RRS ID and contact info, Stones "Angie"
0140z: Off mid-song during "Angie"

SINPO=54344 until around 0135z, then faded to 44333.  Excellent signal and audio via Kentucky global tuners remote.  Seems to have a bit more thump in the bass than I've heard before with Ronin, but I don't often hear 'em clearly enough to be sure.  Minor fluttery fades, usual summer static, occasional minor ute/data tones in background.  Just a wee carrier here at home via the indoor fugly loop.

0257-0330z: Heard some music I didn't recognize, including some odd warbly female vocals, and what sounded like announcer between songs.  Only word I could recognize from announcer was "shortwave".

I heard a tip this may have been a relay of Artem's world music, but couldn't copy well enough here or via remote tuners to confirm independently.

Miserable conditions, about the same here at home as via two remote tuners that are usually very good in New England and Colorado.

0330-0345z: Reggae, what sounded like comedy sketch or prank phone calls.  Only occasionally audible above the noise level here, no ID heard but other listener reported hearing Renegade Radio ID.

Only able to copy partial ID so far, something "shortwave at gmail dot com"
6930 USB
0415--430z: Leonard Cohen "Everybody Knows", announcer talking, partial ID of something "Shortwave at gmail dot com", song sounded like Peter Gabriel
0434z: Depeche Mode "Enjoy the Silence"
0437z: Clear XFM ID and "Power of X" slogan, yay!  Meredith Brooks song.  Occasionally peaking over local RFI.
0502z: ID with xfmlive.com site, mentioned QOTSA "Feel Good Hit of the Summer".  Said loggings to HFU, Free Radio Cafe and FRN all appreciated.
0522z: Barely audible here at home now, but propagation seems to have stabilized via Colorado remote, not as many fades as 20 minutes ago.
0533z: DJ "Redhat"?  I may have that wrong.  Seether version of Wham! "Careless Whisper", asking if listeners are interested in DRM.
0549z: Sneaker Pimps "Six Underground".  Love dat Kelli.
0553z: Sign-off chatter about "guilty pleasure" songs, a couple other tunes including Boards of Canada.

Really slick production quality, very professional sounding ID's and segues.

Here at home, occasional fair peaks, mostly buried under local RFI.
Very good via Colorado remote on global tuners.

Shortwave Broadcast / RCI 17735 kHz
« on: June 07, 2011, 2107 UTC »
June 7, 2011 - Just another example of recent sketchy propagation.  Radio Canada International (English language programming) on 17735 kHz ranging from poor to good over course of around 15 minutes between 2045z-2100z, fluttering between S1-S9 every minute or so.  After top of hour switch to French language programming, continued poor to fair, hovering from S1-S5 several times a minute.

0203z: "Testing 1-2-3" opening, "Run Around Sue", "Runaway", "Nowhere To Run", "(I'm A) Roadrunner", "You Better Run" (early Felix Cavaliere version?), "Keep On Running"
0235z: Bonnie Raitt version of "Runaway", followed by Wolverine Radio ID, Jackson Browne "Running On Empty", Jeff Starship "Runaway"
0242z: Li'l Pat Benatar version of "You Better Run"

Fair to good over moderate local noise.  Improved to steady and good by 0215z.

Wolverine is one of the few pirates whose audio can make the Palstar cube speaker thump.

Ye olde '80s vault:
0325z: Signal started into fluttery fades after T-Rex, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello "Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes", Go-Gos "Our Lips Are Sealed", Bow Wow Wow "I Want Candy", Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like", Oingo Boingo, Wang Chung, Annie Lennox version of "Walking on Broken Glass"?

BTW, faux on IRC #pirateradio recorded this in Ireland:

« on: June 04, 2011, 2147 UTC »
6/4/11 - I don't often listen to 11m/CB freqs but everything else was dead today - even 20m was fairly weak.  Tried 27025 kHz for about an hour earlier this afternoon (1900-2000 UTC) and heard contacts from as far away as Illinois and Georgia.  Band suddenly died sometime after 2000z, only locals and even those were much weaker.

0341z: WPOD ID's (YL computer voice), sounds like TV theme song show so far.  Heard "Hawaii Five-0", one other that sounded familiar but can't recall.
0408z: "World's finest... Chicago" audio montage with familiar pop songs, WPOD ID.
0409z: Rockford Files theme
0418z: White Punks On Dope - totally Tubular

Fair signal through heavy static crashes and local RFI.

Received eQSL for this show, thanks!

0125z: Faint carrier or sine wave, reportedly testing by Radio A?

Tried outdoors with portable to get clear of household RFI.  No luck.

0130z: Sounded like Blondie "Rapture" looped repeatedly.  Might have been a different song in there after awhile but too weak and buried under regional t-storm crashes to ID.
0225z: Some faint woo-woo music, reminiscent of X-Files theme, right in the mud.

6932.5 AM
0130-0145z: Steady carrier, nothing else audible.

Tried these via various global tuners remotes, no better luck with those.

2237z: Via remote tuner in OH, heard what sounded like Ragnar's spoof show "Pie Rat's Week" with remixed audio bits (my favorite version, especially my own audio clips - nothing but static).  Heard Commander Bunny's voice afterward but any ID was buried in static crashes.  Not a peep here at home or via Kentucky remote.

0200z: Jackson Browne, audio segue bits, TCS ID, more Jackson Browne "Lawyers In Love", "Rock Me On The Water".
0215z: TCS ID, Juliana Montana cooing about her gee mail.  Donner Pass BBQ.
0240z: Still steady via Wisc remote, still just a carrier here at home on the indoor fugloop.
0300z: Dolly Parton "Jolene", Gene Pitney "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", Johnny Cash "Boy Named Sue"

Just a carrier here at home, good via global tuners remote in Wisconsin, sounds good in AM mode on that receiver with 15k wide filter, despite heavy static crashes.  No luck via Nova Scotia and Pacific DX remotes - both have good antennas and quiet locations, but propagation just sucks lately.

Propagation to Gopher Stomp is poo lately - even the Herald of Campocalypse is weak tonight on 6985.
