North American Shortwave Pirate / WBNY 6940 AM (relay?)
« on: May 16, 2011, 2347 UTC »
5/16/11
6940 AM (tried 6300, no luck)
2346z: Some version of "China Girl", not sure if David Bowie or Iggy Pop.  WBNY International Relay Service ID, Belfast addy, into Piratesweek show.
0020z: "Islam's Not For Me" song, via New England remote
0026z: Mouth of Mohammad Radio ID
0045z: Into Hall of Fame Radio fanfare intro - still via NE remote, nothing here at home
SINPO=33222, hearing some occasional ute/data tones, only occasionally audible through static crashes and fades, just enough to copy familiar material.  I can recognize Piratesweek intro song and Ragnar's voice, but only bits and pieces.

Fair via Cleveland, OH, remote tuner, not a peep here at home.  Poor via KY remote - can tell something is there, but no details.  Not a peep via Wisconsin remote.  Fair to good via New England remote.

New England Icom PCR-1500 remote seems vulnerable to occasional overload, tho' not quite as bad as the PCR-1000.  Occasionally hearing what sounds like MW flamethrowers breaking through, but it's not QRM from adjacent signals.

6925 AM
2310z: WBOG ID and Iggy Pop "Lust For Life".  Brother Stair audio bits.  Ozzy or Black Sabbath, "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath."
2322z: WBOG ID, another Brother Stair bit.
2334z: Funny mix of Bro' Scare bits - "You know I tremble", Mr. Mackey, Elmer Fudd, some novelty songs I didn't recognize.
SINPO=43323.  Fair to very good via Cleveland, OH remote tuner, good peaks, some fading to barely audible, static crashes, occasional OTHR buzz.  Not a peep here at home.  Audio seems good in AM mode via PCR-1000 remote.

Hard to tell much with these Icom PCR-1000 remotes - in some areas they're so vulnerable to breakthrough from local MW flamethrowers it can sound like QRM.  PCR-1000's seem to work better with attenuator.

Shortwave Broadcast / WBCQ 5110 AM Sunday
« on: May 09, 2011, 0329 UTC »
5/8-9/11
5110 AM
0328z: Pirates Week podcast now.  Listening on and off for a few hours tonight, heard Radio Jennifer as well. Unusual conditions this weekend.  WBCQ on 5110 much stronger than it's been here for several moths, while 7415 has been a little weaker.

Have hardly been able to copy anything on the funny bands the past couple of weeks, and just weak carriers tonight for TCS on 6815 and RRS on 6940.

5110 AM
0235-0300z: I missed opening (was tuning around the funny bands between 6900-7000) but guessed this was a classic KIPM episode due to the brilliant weirdness.  Entire episode consisted of a reasonably persuasive sounding military or government QSO, with fairly long pauses between contacts, very closely mimicking typical formal protocol, concerning apparent contact with unexplained radio signals from beyond Earth.  Closed with extended CW which was wasted on me since I can't copy CW by ear.

If I'd never heard a KIPM episode before this would have been baffling.  The giveaways were the AM mode (rather than more common USB for official comms) and a few references to 6955 kHz when this relay was on 5110 AM.  Both parties to the QSO did a good job of mimicking the terse nature of official communications.  After a few minutes I recognized Alan Maxwell's distinctive voice, although I'd probably have been fooled if I'd never heard a KIPM episode before.

I'd never heard this particular KIPM episode on air before so it was a real treat to hear it while sitting outdoors with the Sony 2010 portable and a beer, enjoying the balmy spring night.  Alan, wherever you are, well done, sir!  And thanks to the folks at Area 51 for these relays of classic shows, including the William Cooper HOTT show that followed after 0300z.

0330z: Hendrix "Hear My Train a' Coming", others.  Captain Morgan ID per IRC and remote tuner in New England.  Only occasionally peaking thru here at home on the indoor fugloop.

North American Shortwave Pirate / WKND 6940 AM
« on: May 04, 2011, 0002 UTC »
5/3/11
6940 AM
0001z: Been listening for awhile via remote tuner, some hip-hop I didn't recognize, a PSA, WKND ID, shout-outs to furkinds.
0010z: WKND - "We're K9 Dog" - ID, just played some Ice Cube (more stuff I don't recognize), sounds like two fellas on the mic.
0012z: Signal dropped mid-sentence with DJ chatter.

Not strong and fighting heavy static crashes, but occasionally peaking enough to copy.  Alas, all via New England remote tuner, nary a hint of a signal here in Gopher Stomp.

North American Shortwave Pirate / WBNY Easter special 6931 AM
« on: April 24, 2011, 1537 UTC »
4/24/11
6931 AM
Since 1503z, hearing WBNY Easter special via Cleveland remote tuner.  Lots of Easter themed songs and audio bits about bunny hypnotic powers, tire pressure gauges.  Sounds like some new (to me, anyway) voice talent on mic too.  Signal reports to Belfast, NY drop.
1535z: "This has been the 39th annual WBNY Easter program." (Must be older classic WBNY show, I thought CB was into his 45th or 46th anniversary this year.)  S-l-o-w station ID, promise of Easter eggs with direction finders, "Brass Monkey" bit.
1545z: "Key to pirate radio condom fundom."  (Had to triple check that bit - with static crashes it sure sounded like 'condom' the first couple of times.)

Fair to good via Cleveland, OH, remote tuner.  Clear peaks, often obscured by regional t-storm crashes, audio sounds very good in AM mode on this Icom PCR-1000 remote (and no overloading by local MW).  Nary a peep, not even a carrier, via a couple other remotes or here at home in Gopher Stomp.

6925 USB
0415z: Some live Humble Pie with Steve Marriott wailing, "You are listening to Eccentric Shortwave" ID over music, back to Humble Pie.
Good via remote tuner in Cleveland, barely audible here at home in Gopher Stomp via the fugloop.
0425z: More Pie, "Come On Everybody", fair to good via Colorado remote, still just barely audible here at home.

0500z: Back on, Eccentric Shortwave ID after King Crimson.
Very good via Ohio remote, still nary a peep here at home.
0509z: Eccentric op live on mic, shout out to other stations heard tonight - Captain Morgan, others.
0510z: Return shout-out from unid station (voice sounded familiar, can't place it tho')

Very good audio, via the remotes I'm trying.  Good balance and seems to be avoiding too much compression - good dynamic range for shortwave sideband.

General Radio Discussion / Real radio wars
« on: April 22, 2011, 2006 UTC »
These reports make the past decade of U.S. shortwave "pirate wars" seem petty and insignificant, driven by egos rather than genuine issues related to free speech and liberty.

My sincere thanks to "bun" on IRC #pirateradio, which routinely proves itself to be a haven for genuine camaraderie and regard for free radio, despite the efforts of some to paint a warped and distorted picture of the channel.

FM 93 Dilbar Radio in Charsadda, Pakistan bombed
Suspected militants blew up parts of the privately-owned radio station FM 93 Dilbar Radio at about 1:30 a.m. on April 20, 2011 after planting explosives around the building housing the station. Radio Dilbar is located in the town of Charsadda, 120 kilometres southeast of Peshawar in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, and broadcasts a mix of news and music.

According to press reports, unknown persons planted powerful explosive material around the station; two rooms and the boundary wall of the radio station were completely destroyed and some equipment was also damaged in the blast. Two technical staff members and two security guards were present at the time of the blast but no injuries or loss of life were reported.

Shahryar Shah, station manager of Radio Dilbar, told Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) that the radio station had temporarily stopped transmission for 18 hours, but had resumed transmission later that evening. Shah said they had not received any threats, but suggested that the attackers were the same militants who had earlier targeted District Coordination Offices (DCO) and schools in Charsadda.

Police officer Shafiullah Khan said no one had claimed responsibility for the attack. Members of the Gandhara Union of Journalists condemned the blast at the radio station, calling it an attack on the media. They also criticized local police for failing to prevent it and for not providing protection to media institutions.

Unidentified arsonists set fire to the home of Teresa Reyes and Radio Faluma
Bimetu director Alfredo López at midnight on 7 April, 2011

Also: http://hondurashumanrights.wordpress.com/

Unidentified arsonists set fire to the home of Teresa Reyes and Radio Faluma Bimetu director Alfredo López at midnight on 7 April, in the latest in a long list of attacks on the personnel and installations of this community radio station (known in Spanish as Radio Coco Dulce), based in Triunfo de la Cruz, in the Atlantic coast municipality of Tela.

The mouthpiece of the country’s Garifuna (Afro-Honduran) community, Radio Coco Dulce has been attacked repeatedly since the June 2009 coup d’état. The attacks have intensified since the start of 2010, when its premises were ransacked and torched, but they have never been properly investigated and remain unpunished.

Reporters Without Borders and the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC-ALC) reiterate their appeal to the Honduran authorities to lose no time in investigating the recent attacks on the station’s members. The international community must urge the Honduran government to protect all of this community radio station’s rights, including the right to free expression.

Harassment of Radio Coco Dulce resumed again during last January’s local elections, when several of its members were threatened or were the target of unjustified criminal proceedings, although the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has asked Honduras to take precautionary measures to protect its members.

Radio Coco Dulce has always defended the rights of Triunfo’s Garifuna community, including the right to keep its coastal land, which has been threatened by expropriation for major tourism development projects by a group of local politicians and entrepreneurs.

The frequent attacks on Radio Coco Dulce members and the failure to punish the threats and acts of violence against it constitute a serious violation of the Triunfo community’s right to free expression and reflect a desire of the part of the local authorities to silence the station.

Sad anniversary for La Voz de Zacate Grande

It is in this climate of heightened tension that La Voz de Zacate Grande, a community radio station on the Pacific Coast island of Zacate Grande, will be marking the first anniversary of its creation tomorrow.

A week ago, the prosecutor’s office in the nearby town of Amapala ordered the capture of eight leaders of the local peasant organization ADEPZA, of which La Voz de Zacate Grande is the mouthpiece. Several of those named in the arrest order are contributors to the radio station and the charges, which are several months old, directly concern its activities.

The authorities appear to be reluctant carry out the arrests on Zacate Grande island for fear that the local population will demonstrate in support of the station’s contributors, who are however liable to be arrested whenever they leave the island, above all when they report to the court in Amapala, which they are supposed to do every two weeks.

A meeting of community radio stations is to be held today to mark the anniversary.

Reporters Without Borders and the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters - Latin America and the Caribbean (AMARC-ALC) call on the Honduran authorities to stop the harassment of community radio stations and to respect their right to free speech. They also urge the authorities to take whatever security measures are necessary to ensure that there are no problems at tomorrow’s AMARC meeting in Honduras.

6930 USB
0231z: Gladys Knight and the Pips "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me".  Off or faded after this song.

Just audible through the mud.  Audio seemed very thin but was easy to copy with my usual mediocre reception.

0200z (approx): Music, way down in the mud, signal peaked just briefly to copy WPOD ID in female computer voice.
0205z: YL computer voice WPOD ID and "White punks on dope" slogan.  Rock song sounds like Loverboy or Billy Squier, not sure yet.
0211z: Cars "Moving In Stereo"
0215z: Monologue or narrative, man's voice, couldn't copy enough to tell what it was.
0216z: Jackson Browne "Somebody's Baby"
0225z: Sounded like sign-off IDs

SINPO=23422, rapid fluttering peaks and fades, just strong enough during peaks to copy familiar songs.
Audio seemed just a little muffled, but difficult to say much without better reception.  Good punch in the bottom end through the cube speaker, but highs seemed a little lacking.  Probably would sound fine with better reception.

2305z: Was tuning around via New England remote tuner, heard Zombies "Time of the Season", right down in the mud but audible.  Not sure if USB or AM, didn't check via remote.
2312z: Music barely audible again via NE remote.  AM mode now - "Summer of love"?  Nada here at home in Gopher Stomp.
2315z: Channel Z ID after B-52's "Summer of Love", into "Palisades Park"
2322z: "California Sun", sounds like Ramones, "Last station you'll ever need"
2323z: Zombies "Time of the Season" again.

Not sure if the Zombies song was also Channel Z, or if Z came on after another station.

Nary a peep of a carrier here at home, fair to good via New England remote.

0620z: Blues rock guitar songs, way down in the mud, can't quite copy enough to ID songs.  Partial station ID around 0621z, obscured by heavy regional t-storm static crashes.
0630z: "This is Chamberpot Radio with the best freaking blues on the shortwave.  I hope you enjoyed tonight's show.  As always I appreciate your comments to the FRN and the HF Underground," sign-off ID, requesting logs to FRN and HFU.

Fair to good via Colorado remote tuner, just barely audible here at home via the indoor fugloop.

Recorded last four minutes of show with closing ID via Colorado remote tuner:

Since around 2355z (now 0005z), hearing weak continuous data tones, possibly SITOR or RTTY, not sure.

Approx 1240z: I forgot to log any details this morning, but I did hear the sign-on and one other RRS ID (after receiving e-mail tip). Everything else was obscured by unusually heavy early morning local RFI here.  Carrier seemed reasonably steady and if I had a good outdoor antenna I'd have heard it clearly.
