Equipment / Re: Mixing tubes in Ameritron
« on: February 23, 2022, 0154 UTC »
Also, I have this issue, I have the load all the way down to 0 and anything slightly above that the output drops significantly. I have a 1.1 swr on my vertical antenna. Also, at this low load setting the tubes glow, they glow harder when I set it higher. Do you know how I can get it to where the tubes are not glowing and the power is not lost due to a tuning mismatch? I am operating at 6920 khz and the band setting is set to 40 meters.

Do you know how to properly tune a tube amp to resonance?
Does your plate current dip at all?
Tubes in amps are supposed to have glowing plates...just not too much for too long.... ;)

Equipment / Re: 'CB' amplifier for HF
« on: February 23, 2022, 0131 UTC »
How well would a CB type amplifier work on bands such as 15/20 meters? Talking about the standard Texas Star/RM Italy type. I'm wanting to buy a Xiegu G90 and it would be nice to be able to use it mobile here and there.

A Texas Star drops off fast on power outside 11 meters. As moof noted most the older models are 3-30mhz. I had good results with the the older Messenger brand units. Make sure to get an ab biased model if you plan to use ssb. My experience with the RM Italy is opposite of what is posted. I run the RM HLA 150 at CCS at 50% output without a hiccup as my driver amp.

I would suggest emailing some of the Motorola service/repair shops that have been around for a long time, they should have it.
Good luck

All good advice above, If your not using a balun get one.
Ferrite chokes on audio and supply voltage lines.
Good/proper grounding.
Make sure you are tuning the amp properly, you say it tunes fine then you say it doesn't.
Remember this amp is not rated for CCS.

why did ball smacker air on top of the station on 6960usb ?

BallSmacker has been on continuously on 6960 AM at 2100 EDT local for 19+ months *every week*.  A better question would be "Why did a 6960USB station try to overtake BallSmacker Radio"?  No one has a claim to Pirate Airspace but we have been pretty consistent with our broadcasts.  Seems like someone trying to ride our broadcasts.  We follow best practices both in bandwidth and on time/on frequency broadcasts.  We strive to show that pirate radio should be both legally allowed and can follow broadcast standards of signal, timing, and bandwidth.  We feel there should be a legal option (as there are in other free countries) for an amateur broadcast music service, low power shortwave, in the US.

perhaps you should check the logs and listen to your radio and maybe even on air rx's
