Oh, I just missed the drop... I went to bed shortly after posting that. I did try to get that station on the Sony ICF-2010 with a Quantum Loop, but there as nothing. I thought it was just not picking it up, but now the true answer is clear.

Some deep fades, plus have thunderstorms in the region. At times the signal is very good.
The loggings are from listening to the AFE822x. Also have the Yaesu FT-847 and its a little weaker with more lightning crashes (which is expected).

CKDO in here is not all that surprising. But KCHA sure is.
KCHA from Iowa is 10W NDA at 141 miles bearing 164 degrees. While the loop is pointing mostly toward it, surprised can pick it up at all. At times it was really good.
KCHA & CKDO are fighting for attention.

I have a cheap TV rotor and it doesn't have feedback either. I can calibrate it by going from one extreme to the other, or like you, go for max signal (or mininum RFI, which is usually the case).

Depending on the quality of the rotor, those things tend to get way off easily (and unknowingly).

Perhaps the loop doesn't have enough gain for Appleton? Or perhaps the loop's pattern is not as expected?

Nice catches.
I got a few as well in the x-band that I would never otherwise get. Have to still go through 540-1620, but with so many high power locals, I'm not counting on much. Plus storms in the region. Do want to run the recordings through Carrier Sleuth to see what shows up.
