The hour features a big variety of music and a look into rural Alaska life with local information...... weather, community event happenings and news.  Tune in 2100 to 2200UTC. Find us on a web sdr if you cant hear it locally, though as we slide deep into winter, 5900khz can be audible in the eastern US and Canada. (And ive heard it up here late, late at night!)

Shortwave Broadcast / DX Video Airchecks
« on: October 10, 2024, 0034 UTC »
From time to time, I'll shoot some DX video airchecks.. I feed the audio directly from my radio into the phone so its not some windy, echo video held up to the radio.  I don't do anything special, just a headphone cord with a 3.5mm male (1/4") plug on each end, one plugs into my Zoom H1 handheld digital recorders headphone jack and the other end plugs into a special adapter that has jacks for a 3.5mm microphone plug and 3.5mm headphone plug that then goes into the USB-C port on my Iphone 15 Pro Max.  The ZoomH1 is fed audio from the radio with the same type of cord as mentioned above and it goes from the radio to the line-in input of the Zoom H1.

You'll see alot of that set up and my DX gear in the videos below, which feature my favorite SW radio station. I use a TEF6686 Radio, DXEngineering Preamp, ZM2 Antenna tuner and 15 ft circumference Wellbrook Loop

Below are two videos of Radio Nacional de Amazonias on 11780khz. They operate from a site NW of Brasilia, Brazil with 100kw, beamed at 312 degrees azimuth. I am 250 miles NW of anchorage, 350 miles SE of Nome, some 5000-6000km out of their target zone but a perfect combination of a number of factors lead to delivering this kind of signal to my radio from 11780khz on a regular basis. I have searched far and wide for clips as good as mine, even from within Brazil and haven't come up with any

Heard in Alaska with live dj chatter and multiple songs.  SINPO was about 35343 or so.

Here’s a very crudely made recording:

Shortwave Broadcast / For those who like interval signals.....
« on: September 30, 2024, 1605 UTC »
Most days, most broadcasters just crash start and crash end with program audio in progress.

But over the last few days, I’ve caught the BBC WS 9410 broadcast at 0500 via Ascension signing on at 0458 with a minute of Big Ben followed by program audio kicking in with the program promos at about 04: 59:30.

Thought those who like interval signals might be interested to know this.

Shortwave Broadcast / More Music, More Loud Mouthery On Shortwave Today!
« on: September 06, 2024, 1912 UTC »
2100-2200UTC catch a smorgasboard of music, local weather and community event info along with my random thoughts with a live simulcast of the KSKO afternoon show via Spaceline Bulagaria's transmitter on 5900khz in Sofia to Europe.

Catch it on the UTWente SDR if you can't hear it locally

I'm roughly 6000 miles from their target zone. The transmitter runs 100KW, beaming at 312 degrees azimuth from a site NW of Brasilia and targets the Amazon region of Brazil about 1300 miles away. I am only 18 degrees North of the dead center of the main lobe and that, in the world of SW signals is nothing.. since many of them are fairly wide beams.    Through a combination of exactly the right place thanks to amount of daylight, perfection for a 2nd/3rd hop, 11780 is regularly very listenable here and somewhat regularly, depending on the time of year... the signal just pounds in like a ton of led filled balloons.

So how about an example? Here's a video with audio fed directly from my radio into my camera.. no phone held up to the speaker. The signal was so good, I was able to open up my audio bandwith to 8khz.  It sounded like FM Mono!

Here's a video:

6180 is also 100kw and beams at 239 deg to South America and can be quite good here late at night in the winter after the 0750UTC sign on. It is sometimes, but not often as good as 11780 before 0200UTC sign off.

I've also picked up several Portuguese words I can understand/repeat/speak as the host I interact with on air via WhatsApp voice notes has admitted his english is very poor. Mauricio Rabelo seems to be a very lively, well liked host.  Both he and listeners have remarked on/noticed my use of Portuguese in an attempt to bridge a gap.

Shortwave Broadcast / OFF AIR: R Nac'l Amazonias 11780khz
« on: September 02, 2024, 2042 UTC »
11780 was off Thu. Aug 30, on Fri, then it's been off since.

I have a contact in the radio engineering department at Empresa Brasil de Comunicação and asked what was up.

Theres a fault with a piece of equipment, though I'm not quite clear on what it is, as despite my years in radio and understanding of tech, im not too familiar with the equipment. My contact says: "We have a problem with the logic tx, it won't protect the transmitter and allow the transmitter on at high power. The logic tx is very old"

Here’s my reminder to myself today, because if I don’t put this up, I won’t remember, despite my best intentions and will forget to mention it on air.

A live simulcast of KSKO's afternoon show Via Bulgaria, to Europe paid for by an anonymous benefactor (Not me, not the station)

MW Loggings / Peru Heard In Alaska!
« on: August 12, 2024, 1658 UTC »
And no, not the likely Radio Tarma on 4775khz...... Radio Santa Rosa on 1500!

I'll be real honest.. I about s%^t myself!  First ever Central/South American AM heard by me anywhere, ever!

0727UTC Sat Aug 10 .. too ka quick break from SW, tuned over to AM.. I always start at the top of the dial and move left.

Hit 1500 and heard what I thought sounded like spanish where I should be hearing a Vietnamese station that smells like Eggo waffles.

Kept listening and over the span of about 20 minutes, heard copious Radio Santa Rosa mentions... transmitter is off frequency and humming, but pretty clear as day and good signal to boot!

18kw at 6640 miles! TEF6686, DX Engineering Preamp and 15 foot circumference Wellbrook loop!

Shortwave Broadcast / VOA: Cutbacks and A Shutdown
« on: July 29, 2024, 1616 UTC »
VOA and it's parent organization the USAGM has been quietly eliminating some stuff in the last month.

gone is the 15690 of R. Farda from Biblis.
Also gone is the VOA in French on 9885 at 0430 is gone.

And reportedly, the Sao Tome & Principe site has been shut down in entirely.   No word on if any of those broadcasts have moved elsewhere, but one casualty is the high powered 1530khz broadcast of the VOA that isn't going to be moving elsewhere, as far as I know.
