HF Mystery Signals / Buzzy tones 13878 kHz (sometimes 7478 kHz)
« on: February 22, 2015, 1456 UTC »
I hear a strong buzzing signal on 13878 kHz at 1453 Z. It has repetitive nature with what sounds like 3 or 4 bursts per second. I've heard the same signal at night on 7478 kHz. I have heard these signals for the past week weeks without any apparent change in the tones or any ID.

The 13878 kHz signal is s7 on an attic dipole.

What is this signal?

Utility / Who is the voice of "aviation weather" 10051 kHz?
« on: January 11, 2015, 0054 UTC »
Who is the voice of "aviation weather" on USB 10051 kHz? What's his name?  Where is he?

He seems to be the same voice for New York Radio and Gander radio on 10051 khz, heard easily in central Florida at 0030+ Z.

I've heard his voice for years (it seems).

It's the same voice, same delivery, same clear diction for as long as I've heard the broadcasts. There's a old post regard these volmet broadcasts that indicates it's a computerized voice. This makes sense as it's a mundane task to read all of the weather conditions.  If so, it's the most authentic and impressive synthesized human voice I've heard.

Utility / 29788 kHz FM ute comms, Pennsylvania
« on: December 22, 2014, 1605 UTC »
At 1530+ Z  Monday Dec 22, 29788 mhz there's occasional FM voice communication between vans and a base with a 60 Hz hum on the carrier. Both sides of the communications have the same signal strength and the AC hum, so perhaps I'm hearing a repeater output.

Various people identifying themselves with their first name and a van number (i.e. van 43) indicating they are en-route to the Pittsburgh fire station for training.

Also, one person requested days for time off. They were approved.

Who is this?

Other / 29.7 to 30 mHz signals: who uses this band?
« on: November 16, 2014, 1500 UTC »
HF propagation has been favoring 10 meters and higher the past few weeks, but I rarely hear
any signals from 29.7 to 30 mHz except these data signals, copied November 16, 2014 at 1500z:

29759 kHz
29779 kHz
29869 kHz
29889 kHz
29949 kHz

I recall hearing some voice comms near 30 mHz in 1989, but not much else since.

Who's using that band?
What activity has been heard there?

Addendum: shortly after I posted, I found an occasional data signal not heard before on 29896  and 29901 kHz. See the link for a spectrum display. http://1drv.ms/1tXRP2z

I heard these irregular dits zerobeat on 6822.0 kHz USB and zerobeat on 7001.0 kHz simultaneously for over 30 minutes - - for the duration of my monitoring,  the characteristics of the signal were consistent with the attached audio.

Attached is a 30 second audio clip recorded on 6822 kHz. There was a very faint MARS voice net up 1 kHz unconnected to the beeps.

Other / What is this signal?
« on: July 19, 2014, 0500 UTC »
Please listen to the short 9 second audio clip. What is that signal?

I've heard this sound for years. This one was recorded on 7657 khz, but it occurs all over the HF spectrum I think.

One thing about this particular recording is that the tone changes slightly with each burst -- something I've not noticed before.

Other / de 8ZMC 14108 kHz @ 0345z - not a ham.
« on: July 12, 2014, 0432 UTC »
Did 8ZMC replace H7DL?

The non-ham callsign 8ZMC was copied in CW on 14108 kHz at 0345z with Russian Morse code characters copied:  Ш (---- ),Ч (---.) Я (.-.-) in a long transmission. This is the same frequency as H7DL station.

Attached is a short audio of 8ZMC. The signal quality is similar to H7DL (see other post regarding H7DL).

The callsign 8ZMC may replace H7DL as it's also on 14108 kHz, but H7DL's frequently daily activity is not now seen on the Nordic Skimmer. H7DL activity will  show on the Nordic Skimmer with all transmissions on 14108 kHz or 28216 kHz (which is 14108 X 2 = 28216) ending on July 10.

Some of the 8ZMC intercept I copied:

Other / Massive OTH? 30 m (audio + spectrogram available)
« on: April 06, 2014, 2348 UTC »
This signal was s9 for about 7 minutes at 2330 to about 2343z  ( local 7:30 pm EDT to 7:43 pm EDT).

This is the link https://onedrive.live.com/#cid=F98FA31C5C423B77&id=F98FA31C5C423B77!102 to the spectrogram and short audio.

Can someone confirm that this was OTH?
