i was listening on the New Hampshire remote SDR and the signal was a strong S+9 up until 2200 utc and then the signal faded fast, its funny how prorogation works.
im hearing MARS at 6.968.5 USB though.
now seeing a carrier at 6970 @ 2205 utc

at 13:07z using remote SDR to new hampshire i can hear modulation (music) playing but i cant make it out.
screen shot attached.

strange.
i came across this browsing the bands because the modulation sounds like its carrier saturated and they are off frequency at 7.504.824Mhz and during a google search, this thread appeared.
sounds like a bad tube(s) in the high level audio modulation circuit.
are they are still having problems with the transmitter ?
perhaps someone inexperienced attempted repairs/adjustments to the transmitter and completely misaligned/fubar'd it ?
just as i was posting this, it suddenly went abruptly off in the middle of music at 0502 UTC without warning (hours of operation, 7 days from 0200 to 0500 UTC)
funny thing is, you can still see traces of a slight carrier on the waterfall just as it went off.
from a little internet research and concluding my opinion based on my observation, this appears to be a station thats has run amuck and has gone into mjor difficulties, technical problems and budget issues, thats all but about ready to shut down and call it a day.
attached is a sound clip recorded 5 minutes before sign off and a waterfall screen shot 30 seconds after sign off.

into the noise floor here, can hear bits and pieces but cant make much out of OM talking and music playing, must be skipping right over me.
sound clip: 2.5Khz filter, IF NR enabled.

signed on at 20.47 Z 6.925.354 AM with excellent sounding audio (music), plenty of low frequency response, AM modulation percent peaks to 110% in about 6Khz bandwidth.
good signal with fades.
attached a 10 second sound sample recorded with a total bandwidth of 10Khz and audio frequency response from 20Hz to 10Khz, no DSP/NB applied.
21.23 Z - drifted up 16Hz to 6.925.370 Mhz
21.25 Z - heard ID as what possibly sounded like "WBOG" then off air

its not limited to one band/frequency either.
some of it is actually damn good entertainment.
lol

2134 UTC: ID given  "You're listening to Pirate Radio Broadcast 2015 Holiday Special".  QSL info provided with email address.
2135 UTC: ID again, back into music.

Got them at around a S7 on the K2SDR WebSDR.  Thread title says they're in AM mode but the signal looks like USB (I don't see a carrier and only the upper side band)...and I'm only able to hear them in USB.  Are they transmitting a reduced sideband with a carrier or did they just switch from AM to USB at some point?

2137 UTC: More Xmas music, good audio with some noise.  Overall a great signal!
2138 UTC: "Merry Christmas boys" into advertisement for voice processor
2139 UTC: Back into "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time"
looks to me like USB with an inaudible HF tone being generated to create an AM carrier (can tell by the aliasing in the audio in FFT AM)
edit: just after i posted this, the inaudible carrier ceased, perhaps RF cyclic feedback caused it ?
edit2: i agree with R4002, most likely someone tuning up.

Nice catch, I live ~10 miles from the tx site so it's always guaranteed to be blasting in.

That IBOC hash is awful though, can't hear anything else from 1680 to 1720 at least.
after reviewing all their FCC data, i have to wonder how they were able to obtain authorization to operate at 1.7Mhz in the first place.

sounds like a young child/lady playing with a high power transceiver.
i could hear what sounds like 50Hz ? coming through their electrical system they use.
sounds like a crystal microphone of some type being used.
i wonder what the CW under it was all about ?

not sure im going to continue to use youtube to log this as im getting too many copyright claims for the music within the videos.
as of 0113, was peaking as high as S7 averaging S5, heard some type of western country song and what sounded like the OP switching between audio processing mode on and off and then went silent.

heres a short video taken from the Yaesu.
RF preamp is off, AGC is on slow, RF gain is max.
averaging S5 (top row of meter reads 1,3,5,7,9) here at eastern long island (hamptons), new york.
sorry for poor video quality, realized it was set to 320x240 after the fact.
