Followed NAOC/TACAMO and ground sta here from triple one after one mentioned trying the CHARLIE ECHO window (9031) due to poor conditions. Using dual watch on the pro 2 to cover both freqs simultaneously, didn't think the front end bandpass would stretch that far but it works. Need to map out the bandpasses for sure.

POST STAMP calling TANK CAR on triple one after no joy on CHARLIE ECHO @ 1957Z.

OFF POST calling TANK CAR for hf digital check, TANK CAR says hf digital not working at this time, stand by.

TANK CAR telling PORTABLE he will receive data, PORTABLE replies stand by for transmission. Digital mode is three(?) tone fsk.

How badly is it distorted? You can see it clearly with the low def fish finder on the 756 Pro 2. In other words, pretty bad.

You can listen in on their comms on 8131 usb, the ac will have numerical callsigns, the ground stas will have calls like BALANS and KATOLIC. Times and freqs courtesy of udxf!

Considering how many ac and pilots were flown in from Russia, I get the idea the airport will become a partially Russian base in the future.

Just got a 756 Pro 2, haven't had an hf tx in ages, and went thru a vco and master ref osc alignment courtesy of a dmm and WWV/WWVH, all surprisingly coming in on all WWV freqs at this time.  Cheap and fast ref osc alignment; tune to WWV at the highest freq receivable and let the rig warm up an hour or so, then adjust u/lsb for same beat note, or if your rig does cw/r where the bfo can be placed on either side of the carrier in cw mode, flip between cw and cw/r while adjusting the ref osc until the tones match, you're now within a fraction of a Hz.

This thing's now within a fraction of a Hz at 25MHz.

All the vcos were off a bit as usual for a rig this old, many new HAM rigs don't even have vcos, lucky dogs. The B pll vcos were wayyyy off, weird as my first Pro (an original not a Pro2 or 3) all the pll A vcos were off, some by a large measure while the vco b side was perfect, I suppose that indicates the previous owner of my original Pro never used dual watch or otherwise utilised the vco b pll stream so they didn't age much. Seems the previous owner of the Pro 2 used the B vcos mostly as they were a mess and I messed them up further as the service manual for the Pro2 has some errata involving the vco b cap locations as depicted in the manual, but I sussed em out.

Dual Watch (where pll A and pll B are in operation at the same time) is a split RF stream that provides for rx on two freqs, same mode and filter bw, as long as those two freqs are inside the front end passband selected. It also has a nifty fish finder aka rudimentary fft specan screen that can show you up to 200KHz of spectrum. This was pretty high tech for 2002. The dsp chip in the Pro series is the same as the one in the glorious JRC NRD545, but lacks the filter flexibility and the "monkey chatter" dsp glitch 545s are known for. We will see how it fares as a swbc and utility rx.

The gist from the foil hattery is thus;

1. Not just US observatories are shut down but all of them in the western world. Never mind that there are privately owned solar observatories and people doing it at home with ebay and amazon telescopes or anything.

2. It's alleged that unusual happenings were taking place not just in/on the sun but near it as in ufos in the past few days. The Giant Mothership!

3. Our orangey leader suddenly wants to be able to text each and every one of us and is soon to test that capability.

4. Carrington II is upon us, and will make each and every one of us live amish.

5. Wich brings us to use them or lose them. In other words, if you know you're not going to be able to repel (via nukes) a few million Chinese troops from invading once Carrington II takes place, do you go ahead and start ww3 before the solar storm takes out every solid state device?

6. If man deserves ww3, does it make any dif for it to be started by accident or on porpoise?

7. The closed by the fbi NM observatory is far enough away from White Sands and Holloman AFB to make it less than ideal for spying on neat stuff but it is a handy platform for antennas and such. I wonder if they'd host a kiwi sdr for us?
