Amateur Radio / Re: Equipment Recommendations?
« on: January 10, 2022, 1944 UTC »
I'd head straight for a 7300, get it new on sale as the capitalists are trying to sell used ones for almost as much as new. Then all you need is a dipole, a psu, a pc, and off you go. So much capability and you miss out on the fun of bad caps, misalignment, stressed components, etc malaise of the typical used rig. I would say try a G90 but 20 watts isn't sufficient for newbs.

You need ferrous materials to block rf best, a viking helmet would be a good start.

Equipment / Re: Xiegu bangs-out another one, the X6100.
« on: January 10, 2022, 1929 UTC »
It appears they fused what they learned from gsoc and the 90 into one lower powered unit.
They pinched off an fw update for the 90 after concentrating on the new rig, new fw makes mine crackle on sigs weak and strong so back to the 77b fw.
As noted in the story, the 6100 seems to respond with images to ambc and hfbc, not good! Sadly like its father the 90 in this respect.

Equipment / Re: Can a common mode choke really help reduce RFI?
« on: January 10, 2022, 1920 UTC »
I recall some tests qst or whoever made that showed chokes most effective at the rx port, but choke at each end of the line eliminated the line from participating in reception of signals and increased effect over just one end being choked. From then one I try to have chokes at each end. Also consider using different mix cores as that will give you wider range as far as freq goes, some cores are peaky.

Lots of weak/unreadable cw for a time, then settles into a 4 second dash every 25 secs till los an hour or more later, think last time this dash every 25 secs took place they were testing a missile so mebbe another test launch.

Something similar is taking place right now 1858Z  12DEC2022

An hf mode by Kantronics called GTOR used a Golay code like what vger uses.
Surely you recall vger?

Equipment / Re: R-390a Users
« on: December 27, 2021, 0652 UTC »
I have one that has bad caps, resistors, and whatnot replaced, aligned to perfection by a perfectionist who is fairly expert in these rigs by now. It's the most sensitive rig here, hearing things others do not on the same antenna such as sucking a T600 (fsk) sig out of the noise clearly, when the other rigs don't hear it at all. It sits unused most of the time due to heat creation/power consumption, as well as other rigs being simply more effective (meaning ease of use for the most part) at whatever I want to copy at the time. As said they're stellar at ambc and hfbc - something I note is how good the stock detector for am is, I compared it to my RSP2 using synch and a few HAM rigs with ecssb, time and again the 390A pulls out more and better copy. At the time of its creation/service life there was little else that could do what it did, combining strong signal defense at the same time as having incredible ears, excellent for its time stability, and freq accuracy/repeatability. I use it with a variac and feed an old Hammarlund speaker with a 600 ohm xformer. One thing not often mentioned is the few birdies, very clean as far as spurs go. Not as spur free as the Winrad 313i wich you think should be filled with spurs since it's inside a freaking pc, but I digress. Might still work after Putin or whoever lobs some emps our way.

sherweng even tested one;

Can you guys get a bearing on it via a ambc portable? The online sdrs df might not be able to discriminate this one.

Ok that's one fine lookin rig! Now I want one but will have to look into longevity reports to see if it is of the hizzy. A friend wants around the same deniro for a crusty old kw 733 rig

For full power digital use the fan thingy is a good idea. The rig's designed to take heat and the pa is way underrated with respect to power out, but cool usually means longer life. The fan thingy also makes for a fine rig holder.

Been hearing from some that for fm use the best tx audio is produced when the mic gains set to 5 or so, stock is 10 wich is kinda hot.

Back when infotec m600s roamed the earth you could always find some poor ruskii trawler to copy hours of sitor messages from, even in the poorest propagation. Now it's just wx and notams to listen to.
