MW Loggings / NY Yankees not on WFAN 660 am 15 Aug 2019 (tonight)
« on: August 16, 2019, 2116 UTC »

For several years, America's first sports station WFAN has been simulcasted on the original 660 am and 101.9 fm.  The reason was the skyscrapers and apartments were not kind to the am broadcast.  For the second time in eight days, management is splitting transmissions.  The NY Yankees will be on the FM broadcast vs the Cleveland Indians while the am broadcast will feature a NY Giant exhibition game.

I find this a curious decision that a regular season Yankee game would be relegated to fm.  Perhaps the thought is that the Yankee radio network will cover the hinter lands.  If you want to catch the game outside the network area, WTAM 1100 am Cleveland (50k watts) can be received.  (Truth be told, their announcers are better).  Lately, WHLI 1100am Long Island, NY has been behaving and going off air at designated night time hours, this hasn't always been the case.

In years past, the NY Giants would be bumped to sister station WCBS 880 am when there was a conflict.  However, WCBS am is now the flagship, and lone network station, for the NY Mets.

As noted above, there is discussion that WOR AM 710 (50K watt out of NYC) will be off the air overnight Aug 14 -15.  If true, it might open up the east coast for dxing - maybe WAQI Miami, also 50k watts.

Disappointed that no reception received from European broadcasters (RRE, BBC) considering I was so high and close to saline water.  Did receive CRI via Havana, RHC, and Radio Marti, so north/south reception was good

So, I need to put this in context.  I reside a mile north of Guilford,Ct - albeit Guilford stretches 15 miles to Long Island Sound.

While driving south west to work this morning, I tuned to WMNR on their Guilford relay 91.5 to listen to classical music en route to work in my daily routine.  Shortly after I turn the radio on, a WFUV fm 90.7 ID (The Bronx, NY) played followed by the Grateful Dead.  I searched on line and couldn’t find a relay for WFUV (one of America’s classic “college” stations out of the Jesuit school Fordham University). I discovered NYC-run WNYE 91.5 (Manhattan, NY) simulcasts (why bother?) WFUV’s morning program - probably 75 air miles from me rather than WMNR one town over.  This was a first time for this reception, WMNR came through shortly before pulling in to work in Hamden.
