Utility / ALE and MIL-STD 188-110 8025 USB 1915 UTC 01 DEC 2022
« on: December 01, 2022, 2020 UTC »
Received via W3HFU KiwiSDR at S7 to S9.  Appears to be National Guard net with ALE calls as well as MIL-STD 188-110A ARQ sessions.  Could this be an HF mail system?

Interestingly, the 110A traffic didn't seem to stop during the ALE calls, so I'm not absolutely sure that the calling station wasn't transmitting on top of someone.

Started at  1500 UTC with about a minute of flute music followed by what sounded like a computer-generated female voice with an English accent saying "this is, this is... 10211, 10211" followed by more 5-digit groups with each group spoken twice.

I was to slow to catch the music on my recording, so it starts with the beginning of the voice transmission.

This is the same frequency and mode used by the recent Hawaiian Numbers shortwave pirate transmissions, but I'm logging it here unless anyone suggests otherwise.

S5 into the southeastern US tonight on my AirSpy Discovery+ and 80m OFC dipole with no co-channel interference, but a fair amount of hiss.
Had to listen in USB to make out the announcement.  SIO 242

0226 UTC Recorded message with OM repeating "This is radio station WQFG689, owned and operated by Hudson County, NJ.  We are currently experiencing technical difficulties, and continue to work on correcting the issue.  Please check back with 1710 AM soon.  Thank you for your patience."

Heard a pair of OM chatting in Spanish.  S5 signal at my QTH in the southeastern US.

Then I spent longer than I want to admit hopping around different Kiwi SDRs all up and down the east coast listening to them.  The propagation gods must have smiled on these two caballeros, because they could be heard from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Stafford, Prince Edward Island.  For kicks, I checked Westfjords, Iceland, and they were fading in and out.  Not great, but audible.

God speed, Seņores

Utility / 6981 KHz USB ALE and VARA? 1833Z NOV 22 2022
« on: November 22, 2022, 1903 UTC »
Just heard what sounded like a VARA ARQ exchange on 6981 KHz.  I also heard 2G ALE sounding from "AB2" on the same freq around the same time, but unknown if it was the same station.  If it was ALE, the the dial freq would have been 6980.

I know MIL-STD-188 ALE includes some kind of ARQ itself, but this signal didn't sound like that to me.

Utility / UNID 5 Character ALE net 2113 UTC 03 FEB 2020
« on: February 04, 2020, 0245 UTC »
I'm not sure how reliable this website is, but according to
http://www.ominous-valve.com/ale-list.txt, this ALE net is believed to be run by FEMA or other elements of the US government.  The frequencies ("dial" freq USB mode) are said to be:

4610.0
4979.0
5837.0
7870.0
10424.0
11448.0
11587.5
12109.0
13437.0
16011.0
18475.0
20361.0
23390.0

I left MARS ALE scanning this afternoon and evening, and logged these soundings.  To me, it looks like a controlled net where only the NCS sounds.

Despite the dog-centric SSTVs, I'm assuming this was Skippy (meant to write) PeeWee Radio, since he sent the sock image earlier and tends to send SSTVs of images posted on the HFU chat.

Just tuned in via the Jumonville, PA SDR.  - SIO 454 - Playing Spanish translations of American rock songs.  YL with Spanish-language voice IDs.  It may be worth noting that websites and emails mentioned seem to use "dot com" which I associate with Spanish-speakers who grew up in the US, rather "puntocom" which I associate with Latin-American Spanish.

2105 - OM ID as Radio Humperdoo.  Guess it was a relay.

Another relay of Mix Radio International who's currently on 5125 KHz USB.
SIO 222 on the Westminster, MD Kiwi.  Can't pick it up locally.

1704 - Sign-Off?
1705 - Carrier is back.  There was audio for a second, then back to dead carrier.
1714 - Still on.  Every once in a while I get a little audio, right at the noise level.
