General Radio Discussion / Re: 4085 KHz, good choice or not?
« on: December 20, 2018, 1623 UTC »
My opinion: we have it so easy these days to get the word out about a broadcast on a new/unusual frequency so that others can tune in almost instantly. HFU forum log posts, as well as the very excellent HFU Rocket Chat system (which hopefully everyone here is using!) plus the fantastic capability for SDRs to 'spot' signals where radios with knobs aren't looking.

I remember in the 90s there being quite a sense of crisis when the old favorite pirate frequency of 7415 became crowded by strong SWBC stations and then eventually WBCQ took the frequency. Where would pirates go, and how would listeners find them? Maybe some enterprising DXer would be spinning the knobs enough to stumble over a new frequency, and report it to the A*C*E, where other readers might find out about it... 45 days later. Eventually 6925 became the new 7415 but it was not an easy time for pirate DXers during that transition.

We're a lot better off these days with tools on the listener side (SDR) and lines of communications in real time between listeners, and listeners and ops, at no cost. I'd also mention that we are a fairly tight community, and fortunately a lot of trust issues (to say things diplomatically?) that festered over the last decade or so have more or less dissipated as certain individuals have dropped out of the scene; pirate operators can feel reasonably comfortable dropping by the forums, or the chat, and mentioning that they are on the air. Hey, don't even tell us what frequency, maybe finding you would be part of the fun... so in other words, the chicken/egg problem Chris describes can be fairly safely overcome with some careful communication by the operator.

The nice thing about 4085 is that a lot of people are going to have antennas already for 75m and will be well suited to receive your signal, and perhaps even join in on the fun.

Elastica "Stutter" (a perfect 90's alt-rock song) to open, listening via the Westminster MD KiwiSDR.

Wait, you've heard tales, or did you mean to say tails?

English station list again at noon. One of the stations we picked out of the audio on the chat was WNYG in Medford NY. The Wikipedia page states this is an affiliate of "Radio Cantico Nuevo". Sure enough a stream with that audio has been found:

https://streema.com/radios/WNYG

Doesn't bring us closer to where this TX is yet, but some clues.

I was listening to the COMMSIGMA SDR at around 11 AM Eastern today and there was clearly an English speaking voice running down a list of stations, with a mention of one in Jersey City. I couldn't really hear anything else and I searched the Jersey City angle, and there's 2 stations that are licensed there, but I didn't really get the sense that they were necessarily related.

Listening for a noon TOH repeat of that, maybe, which could yield more clues.

Good S7 signal here, but with some audio difficulties to start. Edmund Fitzgerald. Op states "this is Amphetamine Radio and not the Edmund Fitzgerald station".  :D

Huge S9+10 carrier here, but the audio is a little low/undermodulated relative to the carrier. Still a great signal. Tears for Fears at 1725 UTC.

Booming S9+10 signal at 2228 UTC.

Super sweet S9+10 signal here in the Boston burbs... playing Boston at 2148 UTC. Nice audio! Drunk DJ announced just before the song.

"Heads up- Many China made items are going way up in price due to tariffs."

I've been buying some export radios recently, out of a CB nostalgia and to gear up for the next solar cycle. Had a nice opening on 27 MHz today I worked with a new Lincoln II+. I also have a Stryker and a Connex new in box sitting on the shelf. I hope the tariff thing doesn't kill off what remains of CB.

Josh, point taken but..

No strong political comments, please.

Let's make this a discussion about observation of pricing trends of radios, availability or radios, and assorted and related parts and accessories. Could help people make a decision on a radio they might have been holding off on.

Buy that Cobra 29 now before they're gone!

CHICAGO — Cedar Electronics has been selling CB radios to American truckers since the 1960s, helping connect the workers who keep the U.S. economy rolling. But these days Cedar’s business isn’t exactly trucking along.

The Chicago-headquartered company is racing around Asia looking for other countries to host its manufacturing, after the radios Cedar makes in China and brings to the United States were hit with one of the Trump administration’s 25 percent tariffs this summer, making them more expensive to import.

Rare that CB radio makes any sort of mainstream media appearance so I thought this was interesting. This situation of course has interesting implications across a variety of electronic products sourced from China, not just CB radios.

No strong political comments, please.

Band opening today 10/9/2018 around 11 AM Eastern. Lots of Great Lakes region stations (Detroit, Ontario) rolling into the Boston area. 38 LSB is hopping.

I ordered a unit. Expected delivery is in November. I was unaware of the special power supply requirement, figured it came with one. For linear 5vdc it looks like the options are what they suggest on their quick start page. However, I also found this USA made 5VDC 1.5A supply:

https://www.acopian.com/store/productdetail.aspx?q=i573

Quite expensive at $150, however, they can be found used/near-new on eBay for significantly less. Search for "Acopian 5EB150" (1.5A version) or "Acopian 5EB200" (2.0A version).

I snagged a 5EB200 advertised as brand new, for $33 shipped (I did have $9 of eBay bucks I applied). These appear to be industrial quality units, and a little cheaper than buying one of the audiophile supplies from China via eBay (probably a lot less of a wait, too).
