Received my Afedri today, woohoo!
« on: April 04, 2013, 0149 UTC »
So, my hopes were dashed, it's not plug and play, I'm going to have to make some adjustments.  I e-mailed the manufacturer for his recommendations, which I'm confident will get me up and running.  I'm going to be running the afedri directly into the ethernet plug on my imac.

Here's my current imac's settings:
Ethernet ip address:  192.168.1.110
Subnet mask ip address:  255.255.255.0
Router ip address:  192.168.1.1 (not that this matters as im not going through the modem).

The afedri settings:

Ip address: 192.168.0.8
Sdr ip mask:  255.255.255.0
Gateway ip address:  192.168.0.1
Destination ip address:  192.168.0.1

Chris brought up the option of changing the ip addresses on my mac and modem.  I dont really want to mess with those as my puter is working, and if I start messing with it, it'll never work again, LOL.  But I think Chris hit the nail on the head when he recommended I change the destination ip address of the afedri (192.168.0.1) to match the ethernet ip address of my imac, 192.168.1.110.  I'm wondering if I also have to change the afedri's gateway Ip address also, as they currently match.

I don't have a pc, and the afedri control software is only pc compatible.   I'm reluctant to ask a friend if I can install the control software on their pc, so I may bite the bullet and buy a laptop.  I know that I want to avoid windows 8, and windows 7, 32 bit is preferable.  Dell has some models that fit the bill, but I'm open to suggestions on other makes and models.

Ok, just thought I'd keep everyone up to date on my progress as I know some others on the board were considering sdr purchases, and some of us like our Mac's.

So no luck with SdrDx?  I agree with Chris and I think you would have to change all of the 192.168 addresses to match. It sounds like the sdr has a static ip. is there a way to change it to use dynamic ip's? I'm guessing that is what your computer is doing if you have it connected to a router. In my experience, most home routers are set to default using dynamic ip addressing (DHCP).

Hi Kent, you're talkin a foreign language to me, LOL...anyway, I did make some progress, I found an option on sdr dx to find sdr's and it found my afedri!!  Woohoo...Unfortunately, it still says "sdr not connected" and it won't run.  I'm starting to feel like I'm getting close, though.

More info on getting it working, from Alex, the manufacturer:

Please check what is the IP address have network adapter where AFEDRi connected.
And I forgot, but this can really help you.
If you have Windows ased PC near you, please do next:
1. Run SDR_Control software
2. Go to "Network" tab
3. check "Emulate ID" check-box

After this procedure AFEDRI SDR will be seen in CuteSDR and I suppose in SDR-DX as SDR-IP receiver.
May be it can help.

Best Regards!
Alex

So I need to get access to a pc.

Steve,  Try changing the 0 (zero) in the SDR IP address to 1 and see what happens.
What is your internet service provider, cable, telephone, other?

Hi Kent,

Thats one of my problems, I'm stricly a mac household.  Thats going to have to change unless I find a friend that will let me install the afedri control software onto his pc, LOL.  I'm still considering purchasing a pc laptop just to have around..

Thanks again for the advice.

So you can't change the IP address in that Network Setup screen?

Thanks Chris.

This website has a link to a HDSDR 2.60 OS X port.  http://subdimensions.com/2013/03/25/hdsdr-osx-2-60-port/  The page is in Italian, but Google Chrome will translate.  Here is a video of it running supossedly with an Afedri SDR-Net. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEow-0iz5N0 No audio that I could get.

I've downloaded the file and will try it tonight with my rtl-dongle.

Sorry to hear that you couldn't get it working on the iMac.  Is that a new pc or borrowed?

It's a new one.  I picked up an hp laptop.  I think there is an issue with my mac's soundcard as I used to record audio from my hf rig into the soundcard of my mac, now when I do it I get strange distortion, almost like rf getting into something.  I guess I should expect as much, it's 5 years old.

I have to admit, I prefer osx to windows...windows scares me, I've had a lot of bad experiences, LOL.
