UNID 6955AM 2253 UTC 13Sep13
« on: September 13, 2013, 2259 UTC »
Very weak AM noted here the last several afternoons around this time.  Generally at the floor here, but a brief peak here with YL talk, poss SS?

Strongly suspect a SWBC (spur?), but not enough audio here to ID it.

FWIW: I checked the SDR recording, not even a trace here.

Again hearing a very weak AM, S3/S2 floor, with occasional JBA music popping up from time to time.  Still suspecting a SWBC, but can find nothing listed anywhere.  First heard around 2349, off at 2358:45.

I am suspecting perhaps a spur/mixing product of a SWBC stn? Once again not heard here, so perhaps it far enough west (or southwest?) of me that I cannot hear it but you can.

I see that WEWN has some transmissions that sign off at 2400z, as does KJES, WTWW, and World Harvest Radio, but none seem to use frequencies that would produce a mixing product on 6955.

I recall having a mixing product on 6925 before... yes, I posted about it: WTWW mixing with WWRB http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,8238.0.html

WWRB is on 3185 and 3215 during the time period you hear this.
WTWW is on 9479 and 12105
WWCR is on 6875, 9350, 9980 and 13845  (6875 and 13845 produce the infamous 6870 mixing product)
World Harvest is on 7315, 7385, 9610, and 11775

I cannot seem to find any combinations that work.

Thanks, Chris; I also ran the numbers last night and couldn't come up with anything.  This one is very intriguing, and bears more observation.  It is a real signal which appears to be very close to 6955.0 and at least last night, it went away with what looks like a transmitter shut off, a 2-3 dB abrupt drop to the noise floor.  The audio I get has been JBA, and I can't even ID the music genre.

It very well could be a spur or mix, but I am perplexed as to why you or any other DXers haven't seen this yet.  FWIW, 6970 was S6 to S7 last evening, with nice sideband rendering in the waterfall.

It very well could be a pirate, but then again, why aren't others seeing this?

At this time of day, Chicago is very near the equinoctial greyline, which is also passing through Russia, Western China, and Bangladesh.  This might explain why so far this has only been heard here.  I have updated all my HF databases, but I find no reference to anything which might be a possible site.  At this point I am stumped.

I will check for it again tonight, but with  a K index of 3... not too sure what I will hear.

I wonder if it could be a Chinese music jammer? I have noticed CNR1 on 6315 in the morning, with no apparent target.

Perhaps it is worth trying the utwente SDR? I am checking it now, and there's a Russian modem on 6953 tonight. (They tend to change frequencies each day)

Good idea, and I tried Twente, but the ute obscures all.

Slight hint of a carrier now on 6955.0, noise floor S3.  6970 is S6 here with audio.

Gonna set a recorder on it and see what happens; I'd like to see the Strength History on this until it goes away.

It's not surprising, but I can find no preferential azimuth for the loop.

2215 off
2324 back on or seen again
2355 off

WWCR has at least one AM BCB Station on that same site. WNQM 1300 khz, 50kW.  I have not ran the numbers on any of this, but that could enter into the mix as well.

The last time I saw the 1300 array on that site---it looked like it may have seen better days (Common for many many AM sites these days) Lots of chances for diode action. Theres a few "watts" floating around that site by the river.

I have not been able to detect anything on 6955-ish here in GA. The 6970 mix is omni-present most nights here. Sometimes I think I see a mix at 6960, but it is always way down in the muck.

I couldn't make anything work with 1300. Could we be seeing interaction between three frequencies? (Although I would expect that to be even weaker)

There's an FSK-like station on 6960 audible here, I have it on right now in fact. It seems to send alternating mark/space tones. Fairly weak here, fades in late afternoon, so I assume it is from Europe.

Have been seeing this most afternoons since initially noting it, generally first becoming noticeable around 2130z, and it's there today.

Seems to signoff around 2355 +/-, and has not correlated with the 6970 spur.

Seems to peak around my locall SS which is now around 2300.  Audio is there, but just traces on peaks and not enough to ID the language.

Strongly suspecting a Chinese stn but can find no listings or logs.

FWIW, I checked my SDR recordings for the last several days, and there's no sign of even a weak carrier in the 2300-2355 time period any day.

Not sure if this means anything.

Thanks Chris.  I'll just keep an eye on this and maybe someday I'll get lucky.
