ontheshortwaves.com website shutting down
« on: September 25, 2024, 0222 UTC »
They say it'll be available via the Wayback Machine, but if you've never seen Jerry Berg's treasure trove of stuff (including recordings), you should check it out now. This pops up when you visit:

Visitors to this site, please note that www.ontheshortwaves.com will be closing down on or about November 15, 2024. ontheshortwaves.com came to life in September 1999 as a companion project to the print volume, “On the Shortwaves, 1923-1945: Broadcast Listening in the Pioneer Days of Radio,” published by McFarland & Co., Inc. The site took on a life of its own, and has been active for all the years since. We hope you have enjoyed this walk through shortwave broadcasting’s past, and we thank all who have supported us over the years. (Our content will still be in the Wayback Machine.)

For those seeking more on SWBC history, McFarland published three more volumes on the topic (see our homepage).  All four books are still available in print and ebook format (search “short wave” on the McFarland website).

Thanks again.

Jerry Berg & John Herkimer
Big into SWDX late 70s through early 90s, then forgot about it and when I returned via SDRs it wasn't at all what I remembered, but I'll deal with it. Grumble, grumble. All SDRs acknowledged, nothing is from my own radio.

Thanks for this.  Not heard of that site before, but a quick glance shows a treasure trove of information.
Default RX location is Wisconsin using various wire antennas. Other RX will be noted.

I'm using Sitesucker to make a copy of this site in advance of the scheduled shutdown, just in case the Wayback Machine doesn't last (it seems to have a pretty complete snapshot from September). It's taking a few days because I have a slow connection and computer but should be done by tomorrow. I'd like to make it available eventually but it would far exceed what I can do in my personal web space and I wouldn't want to spend more than a few bucks a month on it.

Central and South American tropical band stations always seemed so exotic and fun to hunt in the 80s. Forgetting big religious broadcasters, like HCJB in Ecuador and TGNA in Guatemala, and a couple of big international services, like RAE in Argentina and Radio Bras (which relayed from outside the country until later on, if I recall), the smaller stations were elusive and always exciting to catch. There used to be tons of reliably heard commercial SW broadcasters out of Venezuela in particular (Radio Rumbos from Caracas, Ecos del Torbes from San Cristobal, etc). Peru was tough to hear, and even tougher to verify. Thanks for sharing this on-line resource, while it's still available!
All reception direct-- From my location, radio and antenna.
QTH New Hampshire (70 miles north of Boston).
Tecsun S-8800 and Kenwood R-2000, with about 135 feet of wire thrown up in the trees.
eQSLs most appreciated to molvaniapoacher@gmail.com.

Wow, that is the first time I have seen a reference to TGNA in 45 years!  By the way, just found a another cool site: https://abetterpage.com/SW/index.html
