For those of us not too far away from Philly, you might want to come
into town for a screening of the excellent documentary film you
enjoyed (or missed!) at the SWLfest this year: "Resurrect Dead: The
Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles."  It won Best Director of Documentary
at Sundance this year!  The Director Jon Foy chose the 2011 SWLfest
as the premier (private) screening venue as a Thank You for all the
help we gave him and his staff for making the documentary a success.

Much of it was filmed at the 2006 SWLfest, and it features some of
our inimitable characters there--as well as an intriguing story line
that includes mysterious pirate shortwave broadcasts.  Definitely
worth seeing, even if you saw it before.  It's playing at
International House (3701 Chestnut Street in Phildelphia) on Sept 8,
10, 11, 12.   See you there!

Hmm...did my post about this on Tuesday Sept 6 not make it to the
list?  Anyway, on Thursday the (Sundance Award-Winning) documentary
film director Jon Foy asked me to give a short presentation during
the Q&A after the Philly film premier--so I talked a bit about pirate
shortwave broadcasts and brought in an E.F. Johnson Viking
transmitter and matching TVI filter to show the audience.  (The
subject of the film was a mysterious individual who reportedly used
such a transmitter on 6250 KHz in the mid 1980's to promulgate their
bizarre message to the world.)

One thing documented in this film is these strange broadcasts were
heard coming through people's TV sets in Philadelphia.  The
filmmakers and I have had an ongoing discussion about whether this
was intentional TVI or not.  They thought yes, I thought no.  But the
night before the film premier and presentation it occurred to me that
the 10th and 13th harmonics of 6250 KHz nicely line up nicely with
the audio carrier frequencies of *both* KYW-CH3 and WPVI-CH6 in
Philadelphia.  This seems beyond coincidence to me, so it made for a
good discussion at the Q&A.

The theater was sold out with 350 in attendance, and I told them
about the SWLfest and suggested they check it out the website.  At
the reception afterwards several people approached me and asked for
more info, so I'm hoping this film will bring more people into our community.

If you can't come to Philly and see this excellent film on Sept 10,
11, or 12th, it's available on Video On Demand (check the website
below for more info) and should be out on DVD sometime this
winter.  It was screened at the IFC theater in New York City last
Friday (Sept 2) and got good reviews in both The New York Times and
Village Voice.

Cheers,

Just a heads-up; the film's director advised me his movie is unlikely
to screen at commercial movie theaters because their management is
loathe to screen films that are  already available via Video On
Demand.  Not even the Ritz theaters in Philadelphia (known for
promoting local films) would screen it for this reason--despite its
being a local film that won "Best Director of Documentary" at the
Sundance Film Festival.  Go figure...

So, Google Alerts are very unlikely to alert you to this film showing
in your town--unless it's Philadelphia tonight through Monday.

There may be a simpler explanation for the "tvi" to then tv channel 3. As I watched the film at this years swl fest, I began to recognize a series of items that were familiar to me. These included the place that the guy lived, his general appearence and the reported "buzzing sound" that people in the film said they heard comming through their tv sets. It was in that time frame, through a 3rd party, that I sold an old piece of military radio gear called a PRC-77. It covers the freq range 30-76mhz fm and has a 150z tone generator on transmit which probably is the source of the buzzing sound. I was told that the buyer wanted to transmit religous programming on tv channel 2 in New York. The radio was capable of transmitting on both channels. Channel 3s audio was on 65.75mhz back then. The 3rd party confirmed for me that my suspicions were correct. So at least that small part of the mystery my be solved.  CRAIG

Actually, the person responsible for the broadcasts personally wrote
to a listener that they were using a Johnson Viking shortwave
transmitter on 6250 KHz, and witnesses were quoted in the film as
saying they saw him driving around the neighborhood with a HF whip on
his car.  The TVI reported by firsthand witnesses in the
film--including the buzzing--is consistent with harmonic interference
from an HF transmitter without a low-pass TVI filter.

There is no evidence that any VHF transmitter (such as a PRC-77) was
being used.

Fascinating stuff.  This confirms Ragnar's recollection that Toynbee Radio existed in an earlier incarnation, before the 2008 version heard in the vicinity of 6925-6955 kHz USB.  (Note to self: Finish that danged HFU wiki entry!)

This film featuring the SWLfest is consistently selling out a 350-seat theater night after night--so another screening is being added this Tuesday. If you're within an hour or two of Philly, it's worth catching this film with a big general audience. This is the final cut with a few changes and additions to the rough cut that was privately screened for us at this year's SWLfest.

It should be available via Netflix this fall, and on DVD early next year.

JUST ADDED: One more ?Resurrect Dead? screening

Sunday September 11, 2011 ? Due to popular demand (three sold out screenings, plus one near-capacity, with Monday night?s screening on the way to another sellout), we?ve added one last showing of ?Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles.? As always, the cast and director/producer/composer Jon Foy will be here in person and participating in a post-screening Q&A, except for Colin Smith, who has to return to Boston. That happens Tuesday night, September 13, at 7pm.

Thursday, September 8, 2011 ? As you hopefully already know via our website, Facebook, or the raft of press attention it?s been getting, Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles premieres tonight. Tickets are going fast and will definitely sell out at the door, but we have some left for Saturday?s, Sunday?s, and Monday?s screenings.

Here?s the City Paper?s and Weekly?s takes. Here?s the PW cover story on the film and the saga of Director Jon Foy at Sundance, where he won for Best Director of a Documentary, from February.

A little out-of-town rag called the New York Times gives the film an ?NYT Critics? Pick? here. ?As they hit leads and stumbling blocks, Mr. Foy?s moody score and dexterous editing accentuate the mystery. Though their quarry eventually appears to be a model of paranoia and prejudice, it?s the thrill of the hunt that keeps ? Resurrect Dead? compelling.?

Last night I attended the fifth (extended by
popular demand) and final screening of "Resurrect
Dead - The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles" in
Philadelphia in a packed theater of 360
people.  It was followed by rapturous applause
and an extended Q&A with the Sundance
Award-Winning Director Jon Foy.  Some people
asked questions about shortwave and the SWLfest, which is featured in the film.

The website http://www.resurrectdead.com/  lists
upcoming screenings at (mostly non-commercial)
theaters across the U.S.  It's also available via
iTunes.  The DVD should be available early 2012,
with extra features--including shortwave stuff.

Cheers,
