WA Police Probe Fake Radio Call Reporting Shooting
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 5:47 p.m. ET

PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) -- An investigation is under way after someone broadcast a false report of an ''officer-involved shooting'' over a police radio frequency in the northwestern Washington city of Port Angeles.

The Peninsula Daily News reports that the phony broadcast Saturday night from an unknown source said the shooting had occurred at a city restaurant. Officers from the Port Angeles Police Department and three other agencies converged on the restaurant with guns drawn, but found no crime had been committed.

The hoax call came nearly a week after four police officers were gunned down in a coffee shop in a Tacoma suburb. Another officer was shot and killed on Halloween night in Seattle.

Police Deputy Chief Brian Smith says a criminal investigation has been opened and investigators are determined to find who was responsible for the false report.
