What is all the chatter on 6925 LSB?  Down in the noise, 2-way conversation, non-English speaking, last hour.  Illegal comms? Ute?

Its the pescadores.  Portuguese fishermen yakking away. We call them the "peskies".

Oh yes, they know. They very intentionally interfere with broadcasts all the time. I have been known to flip over to lsb and blast them with annoying sounds and music from time to time to retaliate.

Now hearing English comms on 6986.5 USB ... not readable. Possibly USCG, maritime lingo.  Didn't realize there was still so much chatter on the bands!

The Nicaraguan Coast Guard out of Bluefields operates on 6925 at times. As an English patois is heavily used along the Caribbean coast of Central America, it can sound like a weird type of Spanglish. They run a little network for ships in the region.

The Mexican military operates in the 6980-90 range and you'll occasionally hear Canadian mil-comms around 6955.

The pescadores run from 6890 to about 6975. Some nights they blast in, others they're weak. It all depends on propagation, where you are, and the time of the day.

There are pesquitoes all over HF, particularly between 6200-7000 kHz.  Besides maritime comms - formal and informal - there are long distance truckers, and some remote islands still use HF comms like we use telephones.  The languages you hear depend on your region and propagation.  I hear mostly Spanish, English and some Brazilian dialects - not just Portugese.  If you try some online receivers around the world you'll hear more variety, including many Asian languages, Russian, and others.  A couple of months ago, via a web SDR in Europe, I heard a long, rambling, profane and hilarious rant by an Irish sailor griping about conditions on his ship.

A few months back there was a couple, a man and a woman, who would have conversations about mundane things on 6925. From the context it sounded like the man was at sea in the Gulf, and the woman was on shore. It was kind of fun to listen to them, but I think they finally figured out that they had a much larger audience than they had assumed, and they disappeared (from that frequency, at least).
