USCG DRM, 5200 kHz, DRM mode, 0110 UTC, 06 November, 2016
« on: November 06, 2016, 1340 UTC »
An unknown (to me) DRM signal on 5200 kHz, noticed at 0110 UTC no 6 November 2016, however looking at the waterfall it has been there for some time.

So why aren't I putting this in the Shortwave Broadcast section?  This freq does not appear on any DRM broadcast list I can find, and while the signal has never been strong enough for me to get audio decode, when the station has gotten strong on short peaks the ID/Tag under DRM keeps reading "USCG Journaline".

When I checked this morning, starting about 1300z, the DRM was still present, signal is a bit stronger, however Chinese OTHR is killing the SNR, so still no decode beyond the occasional ID/Tag as above.

Interesting, a text mode built into DRM.  I have never played with DRM at all.  Anyone know a good decoder?  Preferably one that will do the Journaline mode also?  I tried Dream a few years back, but it seemed to have issues.

And at 1540z still going.

Possibly an indicator of what is going on here:

(edit)  Antenna bearings and propagation are consistent with Kodiak, AK.  I think this is going to turn out to be a USCG transmission, so I am moving the thread to Utility.

This USCG DRM signal on 5200 kHz was up before 0100z today, 7 November, 2016.

I have a couple of DRM programs running now.  I see that the signal contains at least 4 data channels, they are labeled:
1 USCG Journaline | Data: Journaline (11.04 kbps)
2 USCG AIS DATA | Data: (11.04 kbps)
3 Binary File Pool | Data: (11.04 kbps)
4 Quality Test | Data: Unknown Service (0.60 kbps)

No audio heard so far, I don’t know if I have incorrect settings or if there is indeed no data on the signal.

Selecting the Journaline data line you find multiple lines of information, from safety bulletins, weather reports, etc, to ESPN sports results.

Here is a video of the signal at my location, with decodes and the data currently being shown.

This signal and station are on 8000 kHz tonight (November 9, 2016), as it was last night.  Same kind of data, same format.
