DGPS Logs Nov 19, 2016 1700 to Nov 21, 2016 0300
« on: November 21, 2016, 0509 UTC »
The S Africa one is definitely a false decode. The rest seem good.

Nothing terribly exciting in the data here, except for perhaps Panama. On the other hand, the graph is interesting, specifically the 1400-1700 UTC (0800-1100 CST, 0900-1200 EST) catch of NC, SC, and VA. Wasn't expecting them to be coming in during the morning like this, especially since they're off to the side of the loop. The SDR will continue to record continuously for a while and we'll see how the upcoming days are.

Panama is regarded as a pest here :)  There is a second station in Panama (Gatun 307 kHz) that I have logged in the past, but not recently. I wonder if it is off the air?

I've noticed interesting daytime catches as well, where the signal from one or more stations will suddenly appear for a few minutes, then vanish again. It reminds me of HF propagation on 43 meters, when after the band has gone long, a station will suddenly appear again with presumably NVIS propagation for a few minutes, usually with a strong signal, then vanish again. Both the fade in and out are very quick in that case, almost instantaneous.

Now with more data- Nov 19, 2016 1741 to Nov 23, 2016 1416

Danang and Capt Aghulas are invalid, but Upolu Point is probably good.

During this long stretch, I was surprised for Hawaii. My ALA1530S+ is N-S and according to the calculations from DGPS, Hawaii is at 266 deg from here, which puts it 94 degrees on the loop. This loop is around 30 dBm lower off the side. I'll take it. I did try putting the loop E-W a while back, but lots of noise. Can't remember where 286 kHz was with respect to the noise, but will be trying some things here.

Once we get to the ones with at least double-digit decodes, those are all valid. Some nice stations in there too.

I suspect there's lots of competing factors involved with getting the DGPS stations. Not only do you want a good signal from the desired station, but you don't want to get another station on the same frequency. This is where recording the entire night helps, you get those brief windows when the unwanted station fades out, bringing in decodes from the desired stations. It's interesting to see how much the results vary from night to night, even for just one station.

How directional is the ALA1530S down at 300 kHz?

Did a rough measurement around 24 Nov 2016 UTC 0025 with the Perseus and Wellbrook ALA1530S+ on a TV rotor near ground level in a shed out in the back yard.

A local NDB station on 400 kHz (PPI) was about 30 dB between max & min.

On the DGPS stas around 300 kHz:
297 kHz (792, MS)
298 kHz (831, MI)
299 kHz (866, OK)
304 kHz (777, WI)
317 kHz (864, WI)

All except 831 were 30 dB. 831 was 20 dB. Roughly. 831 was noticeably less directional.

The method used for PPI was to put a marker on the carrier and tune for max/min.

Method for the DGPS stations was to watch visually for max & min. The signal is too wide and variable for using the marker as I did with PPI. While not precise, but I could easily tell within 5 dB (the difference of 831 of 20 dB vs the rest was clear).
