Edit: also want to bore something here, what is data then defined as? It is not to say something like we are living in a simulation but there is a natural world an organic one at best.

I think maybe Josh's response was a play on words, cutting in both directions.

The Nazis were National Socialist.  One "form" of socialism, although not in line with how we think of socialism today.  Yeah, they did elevate mass murder to a pretty high level.

But under Communism in the Soviet Union, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the death toll was several times the genocide of the Nazis.  The exact number will be argued endlessly, and never proven, but few doubt it was at least 3 times the Holocaust.  Another "form" of socialism.

And there are other examples of Socialist and Communist regimes with exceptional state directed high murder rates, but those two are probably the top of the heap.

It is sometimes hard to discuss history without tinctures of politics.

I'm afraid that the Nazis were no form of socialism. Having the word in their name doesn't make it so, any more than root beer is beer due to the presence of that word in its name. They didn't stand for the goals of either evolutionary socialism (raise the standards of working classes, both economically and socially, through fair labor practices and social safety nets) or radical socialism (seize control of the means of production, erase all class distinctions). That's why "communist" is not synonymous with "socialist." It's like saying "Christian" when one means "Eastern Orthodox."

Communists have certainly killed more than Nazis, but arguing one is worse than the other is to say that one wasn't really all that bad. It's an insensitive argument at best, and a gross distortion at worst. I don't think the families of the victims of a serial killer who murdered six  feel better that it wasn't a very prolific monster like Ted Bundy who took their life. Ultimately the relative death count is a result of the much shorter time period in which the Nazis were in power, not any kind of moral measurement between the two.

Even that brain dead ex-flooring installer, Sean Hannity, gave up on it in 2012 when he found it didn't have legs to stand on. Mike Savage may still run with it, but hey, he was Tim Leary's gatekeeper at Millbrook back in the mid-60's. You've got to figure months worth of heavy doses of pure Sandoz LSD, along with other psychedelics, left him thinking all sorts of weird things? He's obviously still not right.

You missed my point.  I do not consider the Nazis socialist, I only stated that they were, by their own definition as how they named themselves, National Socialist.  It was a name only, without the recognized properties of socialism of any kind.  That is why I called it a play on words and cutting in both directions, and why I used the term "form" in quotes.

And he was stopped by the Vietnamese who had defeated the U.S. three years before and then repelled a Chinese invasion in the months after liberating Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge. We're still calling Gen. Giap who was running the Vietnamese Army at the time a "monster". All he did was defeat two world powers that invaded his country and liberate one next door that had been taken over by genocidal regime.

Who was the monster, the forces that unleashed conditions that brought about the "Killing Fields", or the man who brought them to an end?
