2.790MHz AM ABC Local Radio, Australia??
« on: December 26, 2017, 2151 UTC »
In the very early hours of this morning I was chasing North Korean stations in the 2-4MHz band and came across a mystery station;

2.790MHz AM with clearly Australian talk-back radio at 1750z with a strong plus 20dB over signal report, I though it was ABC Radio National but at 1800z it identified as "ABC Local Radio".

ABC Radio in Australia used to run a 2MHz relay service to outback Australia from Alice Springs in the Northern Territory on 2.235MHz, 2.325MHz and 2.485MHz AM during our late evening and through the night.

Those services were discontinued nearly one year ago due to "rationalisation reforms" at the ABC in order to save money, Radio Australia on all the SW bands was also terminated along these lines.

All services promptly went off the air at the due date.

So what is the mystery station on 2.790MHz AM carrying ABC radio?  Was there a change of heart due to public outcry and one station reinstated?  There is no mention of this station on the ABC web site in Australia nor any mention via Google Search.  Also not connected with the 4KZ Innisfail QLD relay on 5.055MHz either.

Noted on air at 0630z today with a good 5X9 report on 2.790MHz AM with live broadcast of "ABC Grand Stand" cricket match, should be audible in Pacific and USA soon when Grey Line nears... ;)

At 0700z sharp the said station went off the air during the cricket commentary, very strange, maybe a pirate or someone playing about?
