CFVP Calgary

Kind of like the legendary white whale, I wasn't sure this broadcast actually existed. But I'm getting a poor to fair copy this morning. Apparently it's a standup comedy format via I heart Radio. There's a station like that in Denver, probably the same thing.

Nice catch! I have been trying for this one for years. Between Radio Marti and the Cuban jammer, I've had zero luck.

Thank you, Chris. It was completely unexpected, just scanning 49m before sunrise and I hear an audience laughing and people speaking English. Nobody ever reports this station. I guess I have a bit of an advantage since Radio Marti signs off at 1200z, still a good 90+ minutes before sunrise here. Then again, 49m signals continue to persist well past sunrise here, some for nearly two hours. Winter meets low SFI, I guess.

Just noticed this posting! Tip of the hat to you MDK2! I cant even begin to tell you how hard I've tried to hear this one! I must have tried at least a couple hundred times in the 1980's without success, as well as any number of tries in the early morning hours since late 2013. I figured CFVP was some kind chimera....actually I am sure I would have better luck if it weren't for Marti and that damnable Habana jammer as Chris S refers to. Great catch!
QSL's to poorbrookking >at< aol.com are greatly appreciated! All reception and postings using My radio, My antenna, and generally in real time(excluding posting of SSTV images!).

Thanks Skip!

I've tried to tune in a few more times since this post, but the signal has been too weak to hear. Must have had some little opening that day.

Great catch! Don't think I can get CFVP Calgary in my location, as I get Radio Marti with the Havana Jammer on the same frequency

I can copy this station okay during the winter daylight hours, but its difficult during the summer because of Radio Marti signing on at 0000 UTC and staying on through the night. Usually I copy the 1060 AM 50 kW transmitter much better.

Here on the California coast, am able to hear Calgary SW even in summer:

CANADA. 6030, Calgary - CFVP relaying CKMX (AM 1060), 0820+ UT, June 25, 2022. Comedy by Brian Regan,
Howie Mandel, Dennis Regan, Todd Barry, Dennis Miller, etc.; commercial announcements; even with Cuban
jamming, was doing very well for 100w! My audio - https://app.box.com/s/gstx5yqvb867r163iq3dl68wirm78drc .

I'm under 700 miles away from Calgary, but this one is a reach here during the summer daytime hours, and that Cuban jamming on 6030 can get in the way even after Radio Marti goes off the air. One of the ways I know seasonal conditions are changing is when CFVP comes in easier at all hours, usually in the fall and winter.

However, a couple nights this week, I've heard CFVP coming in over the jamming during local late-night hours. The irony, of course, is that the station's AM version on 1060 kHz booms in here at night year-round.

Interesting, I heard CFVP mixing a lot with Marti last night.

CFVP shortwave dark?

Bell Canada who owns CFVP, has cut many positions in its Media division, stations shuttered, foreign news bureaus closed, the CTV television network continues its downward slide.  So I assume the shortwave outlet CFVP is dark as well.  it seems Wikipedia has been updated and refers to a June 14th final transmission  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CKMX

Here in Winnipeg, a Sister station Funny 1290 AM (CFRW) is also dark. Formerly this was a TSN sports format, previous to that an oldies format, and many years 1989-ish ago 1290 FOX, a light music for the dentist's office type of station.

The station reportedly went into a loop at 10am local time, with an announcement claiming bad days for AM radio, and a few minutes of elevator music.  The carrier was off the next day.
very basic gear: Realistic DX-160, bunch of alligator clips strung together for an aerial.
