You could try an upright "L"or an inverted "Y" if you've got the height. They're both variations of raised groundplane antennas. The "L" is nothing but a dipole w/ the active element vertical and the other horizontal about 6-8 ft. of the ground. Feed it in the center at the same height and it matches 50 ohm coax. It's dead easy.

With the inverted "Y" you add another resonant ground element and feed the sucker at the same height as the "L" for a 50 ohm match, give or take.

That being said I don't like either of them for listening in town. They pick up too much noise. In the sticks you'll hear things with them that normally don't open for a good 45 minutes w/ other antennas. Out there, they're whisper quiet. Plus they're a quick up, quick down, transmitting antenna.
