Fall 2018 NDB logs
« on: August 05, 2018, 1436 UTC »
Logs from Downers Grove, Illinois

With a slight abatement in storm noise and the need to continue testing antennae, we declare the Fall NDB season as officially open.

A nice early haul!

I was doing some beacon listening last week, testing out some ideas for Amalgamated NDB. Sadly they did not pan out, but I may try some others. The variability of morse speeds, and even actually following the symbol and spacing rules (which most beacons don't seem to) makes it a challenge to automate.

Dash 3X duration of a dot.  Dot .1 - .125 sec.  Time between dots and dashes = dot.  Time between letters = dash.  ID 3X equally spaced within 30 sec.
That's in the ideal world, in the real world... maybe not so much.  (Not to mention those beacons that miskey year after year).

Yes, that's the definition. Unfortunately, my empirical evidence shows that many (most?) NDBs don't follow this. Not closely enough, anyway. I measured a wide range of ratios of dash to dot periods, inter symbol periods (vs the dot length) and inter character periods (vs the dot length). Not to mention the different speeds overall. Which is unfortunate, since if they did, I'd be able to code a very nice decoder that could chew on the entire band at once and generate your logbook. Maybe even spit out reception reports to send to the stations.

The difference was large enough that I did not even bother to check the stability of a given NDB (overall speed, as well as the above ratios). My concern there is that NDB transmitters actually have tiny monkeys inside, tapping on the morse code key. Each monkey sends at a different rate, and sometimes the monkey gets tired and sends a little more slowly, other times it sends more quickly, maybe after it had a coffee.

And let's not even think about RF frequency stability.

Hmmm,  banana powered NDB.
Maybe need to buy the monkey a keyer.

Anyway, it somewhat gives the beacon a personality.  Like the "fist" of a particular CW op.
