In another thread in the equipment section there is reference to "tracability" of purchased equipment. My friend is interested in building xmitters for lowfer (cw beacon) and possibly AM xmission on like 6.9 to 7.x mhz (for experimental purposes, using adummy load, but ultimately without a license). To get started, she is looking at xstals on mouser to build around. Is it truly concerning to purchase from a source like that?

I posted in that thread. I mentioned "Radio 741 RF and Microwaves" as a source. Someone else said they could not find it. It's too long for me to type and I could not figure out how to copy and past it. I got a couple of crystals from them. Came airmail from Greece in only 4 days. Here is a link:

Xtal manufacturers are few, I have met a local UK one who'll make whatever you want.

Personally I'd go DDS as they're so cheap and have SW to run them.

We could 'Colaborate'!

I have some useful design and PCB layouts to get you started.

At least you'll know where the bits have come from!

My earlier post was about what I did. I would not try to build an AM transmitter from scratch. I found those crystals because that was what I needed for a used transmitter I got off ebay. Still waiting for a few more parts. A more straight forward way to go would be to look into one of Stretcymans LULU clones. He is always around if you need help.

Still have a pile of V4 (pre GaN) PCB's left, built with 6930 Xtal, just need 3 toroids winding.

Simples....

you could go on ebay and buy up a bunch of ft 243 crystals and grind them up to the freq you want.
of course the freqs won't be perfectly centered, but this is pirate radio you are talking about.
if it was perfectly on freq and predictable it wouldn't be any fun. kinda like listening to a lulu wobbling along in the distance  ;)
if you are worried about parts being traced you could act real paranoid and grind all the part numbers and markings off them
so no one can tell what value the parts are or get numbers off them  ;)

should i even mention wearing gloves while building and handling transmitters that you don't want traced back to you  :o
finger prints show up really well on homebrew circuit boards and the insides of the boxes they are put in OOOPSY  ???

 :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X
it's a shame that you have to fear others in the hobby more than you do the gmen

Thanks for the feedback.  It is much appreciated.

JimIO, I have reached out to the Grecian crystal palace on Ebay and ordered a couple quartz pieces!  Thanks for that.

Stretch, some PCB patterns would be great.  I use the printer iron-on etching method, so that would be really cool. I'll PM you sometime to discuss.  Thanks!

You will need sockets for those crystals. They are hard to find and expensive, but an octal tube socket works fine. Just looks funny.  :P

PCB's are easily made by ordering them from PCB supplier.

Gone are the days where it cost £$100's to get a design done.

I use OSHPARK, there's plenty of others, just supply the gerbers.

Don't waste your time using any other method.

I need to move (sell!) a load of PCB's before I'll release any designs but I'm happy to.......

BTW, I  had wrote a somewhat OTT reply to the initial post but then thought I'd got the wrong meaning of 'Tracability' and removed the post

But if you are 'Concerned' about being 'Traced' from something you've made you seriously need to chill and stop being paranoid.

NO_ONE gives a monkies about you or what you're doing, trust me, they have much bigger fish to fry.

I know I used to work for 'The Man' many moons ago....

The internet is a blessing for them as they monitor you on there NOT on SW radio!

We don't do paranoia in the UK!!

I encourage you to be paranoid.  Its good mental exercise.  Just being a member of this website makes you a possible dissident. So be careful who you share your address with because they could be working for The Man.

This link is an awesome story of a paranoid fellow who discovered how police caught him using Stingray and thats how the technology came to light:

My brain is too old for exercise!

If you buy something online, there's a trail leading to you. If you order parts online there's a trail leading to you. In the USA every parcel that sees USPS is photographed, dunno how long the images are stored, or so I've heard. A cashless society controlled by ai will be the end of privacy and freedom, not to mention dissent.

Hey Josh, when I sold craigslist stuff to some college kids, they wanted to use apps to trade money instead of cash.
There's always swap meets and barter...and not bringing your cell phone.
I've been thinking that if there was some A.I. system where everything was transparent, it would prevent a lot of crime. Its like stone age villagers that live under the same roof. You can't hide anything from your kin so that encourages good behavior.
