Time Signal 6780KHz CW
« on: September 26, 2019, 0612 UTC »
Have an unidentified Time Signal service on 6.780MHz CW with pips on the second and extended tone/pip on 00 & 30 second intervals running 0558z (first heard) and still running at 0620z.

Good steady 559 report, not listed in my Time Signal service for HF papers nor nothing found via Google.

In comparison, CHU on 7.850MHz CW Canadian Time Signal only 419 report at best, suggesting the signal is from the Asia/Pacific region. Long path to Europe very weak.

Can anyone improve on the above? 8)

Signal still being heard at 0830z but getting weaker, a search of the ACMA data base in Australia does not show any licence issued for 6.780MHz specifically although the following is close:

6.779.5MHz  Australian Defence Department, Defence Spectrum Office, Canberra ACT Australia 3K00JE emission 400w px, Land Mobile Station, Callsign : AXA-210.

About as close as I can find this way... ;)

If not a member here;

you'll find a lot of like minded radio monitors who submit logs, their log files are worth the price of admission.

Here's an excerpt from my latest udxf log file;
"06778    2012: Unid 0114 ALE/USB sounding TWS (01Aug19) (DK8OK)
06780    : Unid 0150 AM 19 dots & one dash station (09Aug19)
06780    : Unid 1605 CW 19 dots & dash station on top of another dot station. This Australian 19 dot/1 dash signal sounds identical to my log in US (23Aug19) (blw)
06785    152: Unid 2146 ALE/USB clg 175 (01Aug19) (DK8OK)"

I hear it here in Michigan at 22:50 UTC. Nice find as it is not very strong and easy to miss unless you are looking for it.

ICOM IC7610, antenna is end fed.

Are you sure on this? I'm hearing the time pips today (2355-0039 UTC on Feb. 1 and 2) on 6779 USB, and they match the prior descriptions of AXA-210: 20 pips that follow the seconds, with the last one being extended, a pause, then the cycle repeats again.

OK, I'm convinced it's not Australia, as that station apparently has closed, and these pips can be heard around the clock here near Seattle. Origin's still unknown.

I did drop in on the Utility DX Forum, and they list many reports of time signal-like stations around 6779-6780 kHz. There's some speculation there that there might be industrial/scientific/medical equipment of some kind that operates on this frequency.

6780 is allocated for ISM purposes. Also, IIRC, the emission limits are higher in Canada on this band vs the USA.  Food for thought.

I have it here in Richmond, Va. S9 +10 db. 0400 UTC  21 Nov 2023
Strange that in 57 years I have never heard this before.  There may even be two, one much weaker behind it.

For over an hour I have had it on and have yet to see any signal fading or degradation, so it may very well be local. If so, I will DF it if it is still visible tomorrow.
My guess would be some sort of RFID

Traced the signals to an above grade utility box marked "Telecommunications Broadband". In this area that would belong either to Xfinity or Fios.

I posted a vid and pics on the HF Underground FB page
